Immigrant caught with fake passport

1:26pm Monday 9th March 2009

An illegal immigrant who produced a fake French passport when he was stopped in a car park has been jailed for 10 months.

Nurudeen Otubanjo, 44, was behind the wheel of his girlfriend’s car off the High Street in Westbury when he was spoken to by the police.

And the Nigerian produced the counterfeit French driving licence to prove his identity to the officer.

But the police became suspicious when he was asked where he was born he replied France but the licence said Nigeria on it.

Spain: Zapatero government accused of directing anti-immigrant crackdown
By Paul Stuart
9 March 2009

Last August the Socialist Party (PSOE) government proposed giving immigrant workers money to return to their home countries. At the time, the World Socialist Web Site warned that this was only the beginning, and that as the economic crisis deepened it would lead to the forcible removal of immigrants.
This is now happening. Barely 1,000 of the anticipated one million immigrant workers took up the government offer, and the PSOE is now accused of setting the police arrest quotas for immigrants. Government officials claim that lower ranking officials misinterpreted their policies, but the police involved in the program are not alone in rejecting this excuse. Even the daily El Pais, a paper close to the PSOE, has acknowledged, "There is no doubt about the existence of this order, nor about its abusive character."

Santo Aybar, a 33-year-old Dominican, said police "go to the subway station at seven in the morning and ask everybody for their papers. They ask to see my papers all day: at breakfast, at lunch and at dinner.... They treat us like trash, as if we were criminals."

The government faces mass unemployment and the threat of serious social unrest, particularly amongst immigrant workers in the building trades. It has issued edicts for the arrest and forced repatriation of immigrant workers, and now that this has been revealed it is trying to shift the blame to lower ranking ministers and regional police officers.

Police will be allowed to secretly search suspects’ homes and remotely access their home computers for a month under the most draconian covert operation laws the state has seen.

Until earlier this year, Black (not his real name) was the middle man between wealthy immigrant subcontractors and an army of cleaners who worked graveyard shifts for under-award wages at four of Sydney's major shopping centres.

He points out that there was no workers compensation coverage for cleaners being paid in cash. "One woman was injured. She put a workers comp claim in against Glad," says Black. "Glad said, 'You're not our employee', and passed it on to the subcontractor. That person said, 'You're not an employee at all - we're paying you cash'."

Now out of work, the woman may need surgery

Overseas students held like terrorists

Of the detainees, 207 were held for overstaying their visas, 30 for attendance breaches, 14 for failing their courses, seven for not starting their courses, four for withdrawing from their courses, one for a work breach and 36 for other reasons.

Students who have their visas cancelled -- often for working more than 20 hours a week, for attending less than 80 per cent of scheduled contact hours, for unsatisfactory academic results, for completing a course early, deferring study or transferring to another provider -- become unlawful non-citizens.

Once located, they are usually detained pending removal from Australia, granted a bridging visa or made to arrange their own departure.

"I was dealt with very harshly," he told The Australian. "I am not a criminal. I am a student and want to study electrical engineering. People arrested me and put me in a cell like I am a terrorist. My hair still rises on my body thinking about Villawood."

The Australian has learned that a former Bangladeshi university student has been detained for almost three years and one of the 27 Chinese nationals was detained 371 days

Universities Australia chief executive Glenn Withers said that while illegal residency should be dealt with by deportation, these processes "should minimise the need for detention and ensure a proper allowance for associated refugee claims".

"Do you carry your Green Card around with you?"

i'VE OVERSTAYED, WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN!?What will happen is this....

Upon attending an Immigration Official at the airport, any person overstaying their visa will be directed to a room to speak with an immigration officer in greater detail. At that moment, you are in custody, but not under arrest. You are not free to leave, and must answer a large number of questions.
You say you overstayed a working visa. . That's bad for you.
You will most likely be arrested, detained for further interviews which are not brief. Normally you will be held for several hours for interview. The outcome of the interview determines what happens next.
Regardless of which way they go, being they allow you to leave or the deport you, you will have missed your flight.
If deportation is considered or is to be done, expect to be in custody for as much 3 - 5 days.
The other option is just to hide within Australia, wait until they catch you, definitely get arrested, and definitely spend days in custody and definitely get deported.
