German boardrooms remain a man's domain - for now

Women are underrepresented in German top management
The Green party has received a mixed response from all sides for its aim of setting a legal quota for top management posts. There's hardly any consensus on the issue - whether in the world of politics or of business.

Germany's Green party wants 40 percent of positions on executive and supervisory boards to be filled by women. But politicians and businesspeople alike are far from consensus when it comes to introducing a legal quota.

"Germany is a late starter," said Green party leader Renate Kuenast during a parliamentary debate on the subject on Friday. "Employers haven't moved into the 21st century yet. If women are better educated than men, why do we keep employing the worse candidates?"

Women only make up 10 percent of advisory boards in Germany. In Norway, where such a quota was introduced in 2006, one-third of supervisory board members are women.

In terms of management boards, Germany fares even worse - only 2 percent include women.
German society has been slow to break away from stereotypical gender roles. Until 1977 women had to have their husbands' permission to go to work.
"I would never want to be reduced to a quota," she said. "I would want to get a job because of my qualifications, not because of my sex.

The 39-year-old Australian, who handed himself into authorities in the British capital on Tuesday, is wanted in Sweden on allegations of sex crimes.

Howard Riddle, the presiding judge at the City of Westminster Magistrate's Court, refused bail for Assange on the grounds that there was a risk he would fail to surrender.

Gemma Lindfield, representing the Swedish authorities, had told the court Assange should not be granted bail because of his "nomadic" lifestyle, his Australian citizenship and reports that he intended to seek asylum in Switzerland

Is the Media Ignoring Anti-Semitism at Indiana U?
December 7th, 2010 at 4:20 pm STEPHEN RICHER

On Monday, November 27, eight Hebrew texts were stolen from Indiana University’s Wells Library and urinated on. Only a few days previously, unknown perpetrators defaced and threw rocks at the windows of Jewish community buildings (Chabad House and the campus Hillel).

How did the country respond? Jewish websites have spoken up. But The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today have omitted to cover the story. It would be quite the understatement to say that anti-Islamic actions garner significantly more attention.

Why? Is it because the anti-Semitic incident at Indiana University is such an anomaly that it can be dismissed as one crazy Hoosier – an action that is no way representative of this trend? The statistics certainly don’t suggest this is the case. According to the FBI’s 2009 data, of the 1,575 victims of anti-religious hate crimes, “71.9 percent were victims because of an offender’s anti-Jewish bias; 8.4 percent were victims because of anti-Islamic bias; 3.7 percent were victims because of anti-Catholic bias.” See the stats here.

Controversial sign posted in Abbotsford

Posted: Dec 08, 2010 1:09 PM JST

Abbotsford (WQOW) - A sign posted in a storefront in Abbotsford might have you wondering whether we've turned back the hands of time, and for the wrong reason.

A man who's trying to open a strip club in Abbotsford posted a sign on the storefront which read, "No Negroes Allowed". The owner says he had a bad experience with African Americans, but instead of naming names, he targeted an entire race. When police asked him to take it down, he did so. The mayor says there's a delicate balance between private property rights and freedom of speech, and the rights of those who believe the words are offensive and inappropriate.

"And if I offended somebody, I'm sorry about that. But this is America and this is my right," says store owner Mark Prior.

"It is a free country and that's what's great about it but the freedom is for everybody," says Colby resident Melissa Thomas.

The mayor says the city does not condone racism, but is unsure if any further action will be taken.

England accused of racism: Ogura

Kyodo News
Japanese World Cup bid chief Junji Ogura said Tuesday that some members of the FIFA executive committee felt racism triggered reports of bribery by the Sunday Times and the BBC, which turned votes against England's bid for the 2018 tournament.

Ogura, who had one of 22 votes in Thursday's voting for the hosts of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, said his peers at world soccer's governing body even considered taking the Sunday Times to court, irate over the sting operation that saw Nigeria's Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii of Tahiti banned from the decision-making process.

England was eliminated in the first round of voting. Russia won the 2018 hosting rights in the next round.

"The African members of the executive committee were furious over the Sunday Times report," Ogura said at Japan Football Association headquarters.

"The idea of suing the paper at the executive committee meeting was even brought up. The people being accused were from Africa and Oceania, not Europe or Asia, and some felt racism was behind it."

The Salvadoran green card-holder and mother of six saw son Brian, 18, deported to Honduras last year when police learned he was undocumented after an incident at a high school party. Officers turned him over to federal authorities even though he was not charged with a crime.

While national attention focuses on a new Arizona law that would require local law enforcement to act on "reasonable suspicion" to investigate and detain illegal immigrants, police officers in many communities already assist in the enforcement of federal immigration laws during the course of their daily duties.

Section 287(g) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act gives selected, trained police officers in 63 U.S. cities the power to stop, question and detain suspected illegal immigrants. And the Department of Homeland Security's Secure Communities initiative, used in 22 states, allows police officers to check the immigration status of anyone booked into their jails.

Hannah said Thornton complained to her that he was racially harassed at work. The company and the union representing Thornton say he never filed a complaint about any such harassment.

Hannah said Thornton had used his cell phone to take pictures of a noose and racially charged writings found on a bathroom wall at the Manchester beer distributor. She said police told her they have Thornton's cell phone, but police have not said anything about what they found on the phone.

The Parables of Lord Christ

What is the theme of the parable of the prodigal son?

Theme in Literary Fiction
by Karen Bernardo

All works of literature have a theme, even if (in the case of many modernist and postmodern works) it is only that life is ultimately meaningless. The theme of Shakespeare's Othello, for instance, is jealousy; the theme of Ibsen's A Doll's House is liberation. In most cases it is not possible to reduce a theme down to one word, but a theme should be some abstract principle rather than simply a synopsis of the plot. For example, describing Mark Twain's novel Huckleberry Finn as "the story of a boy who travels down the Mississippi River on a raft with an escaped slave" is a synopsis; but the theme of the story is the inhumanity of racism.

Instinctively, even before readers demanded that fiction show structure and depth of characterization, they looked for theme. The Old Testament has a theme, that theme being God's love for His chosen people; the ancient epic Gilgamesh has a theme, namely, the impermanence of life. Theme gives the story meaning; it teaches us something about life, most effectively in a non-didactic way. It gives a reason for telling this story aside from sheer entertainment value, and a reason for remembering it; optimally, it validates our experience.

The Importance of Love and Compassion

By Joy Cagil
Theme is why fiction matters, because it is the quality that gives the story a universal appeal. Some say theme is what the story is about, but that is too ephemeral a definition, which may get confused with the idea or the plot.

Theme enriches and inspires the reader while saying something profound about the human condition. Theme is the abstract concept behind the story forming the story's heart and soul that the exposition, dialogue, and action reflect every chance they get.

Theme is not the characters or the plot or the original idea that started the story. For example, a writer may begin with the idea of exploring family relationships between women, but as his story progresses, his theme may shape up as forgiveness and understanding between different generations of females.

Theme is implied, sometimes without the writer's knowing of it at the start; however, more experienced writers usually work on their theme harder than any other part of the story once they catch on to what it is they are writing about.

In non-fiction, the writer is advised to hone in to his theme and begin referring to it right at the first paragraph. In fiction, on the other hand, the theme usually blossoms through the writing as the story progresses.

An experienced and capable author never pronounces what his theme is about inside his story. For a story to be successful, its theme needs to stay invisible but hinted at with subtlety through other devices of fiction.

Theme is most visible in the protagonist's greatest choice in a story. The easiest way to pinpoint a theme is to put it in question form. Here the question to ask is: what is the protagonist's biggest emotional decision to resolve the story's conflict?

For example, if we take Charles Dickens's "A Tale of Two Cities" the main identifying theme may take the form of this question: Can one sacrifice his life for the one he loves? In the same story, many smaller themes are interwoven as well, like life and death, resurrection, revolution, justice and revenge, war and peace, and power or abuse of power, since many works of fiction carry several supporting themes that wrap around the main theme.

If the theme envelopes an emotion, its power becomes universal. When the writer creates and dramatizes his theme through an emotion, his expression of the truth leaves an unforgettable impact on the reader. Thus an ambitious writer may choose an emotion as the major part of his theme.

Another common technique is hinting at the theme in the dialogue, but the risk here is in becoming too obvious. Although this may be done successfully by an experienced author, the beginning writer should try to stay away from blurting the theme out through the dialogue.

A much used way to demonstrate a theme is through the actions of the protagonist and the antagonist, with the antagonist showing the dark side of the theme and the protagonist the positive side.

Communicating both sides of the argument equally, sometimes through both the antagonist and the protagonist, may define the theme with more impact. In Les Misérables, our softer side may stick with Jean Valjean, but we also see the righteousness in Inspector Javert.

One other way to emphasize the theme is through all the characters in a story, with each character representing an aspect of the theme, as in Godfather stories when the theme of power is presented with each character representing another facet of power.

Les Misérables (Themes

Javert
From Wikipedia,

Some consider Javert misguided rather than evil, although his inflexibility and cruelty throughout the novel moves in parallel to Jean Valjean's kindness. Those who consider Javert misguided believe that the distinction of pure evil in the novel more appropriately belongs to the greedy and treacherous Thénardiers. Others consider Thénardiers a dishonest, petty criminal; although his actual impact is minor compared to the significant levels of heartlessness, malice, spite, callousness and mercilessness Javert inflicts on those he encounters.

DEFINITION OF THEME

Theme is the meaning or concept we are left with after reading a piece of fiction. Theme is an answer to the question, "What did you learn from this?" In some cases a story's theme is a prominent element and somewhat unmistakable. It would be difficult to read Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" without understanding that the institution of nineteenth-century marriage robbed Mrs. Mallard of her freedom and identity. In some pieces of fiction, however, the theme is more elusive. What thought do we come away with after reading Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl"? That mothers can try too hard? That oppression leads to oppression? That a parent's repeated dire predictions have a way of becoming truth?

theme
by: Noel Reyes

Of the various elements of fiction, theme is probably the most difficult to discuss. This is why there is a great difference between reading a story that explores the theme of the difficulty of love and reading the message "Love is
difficult." in a fortune cookie. The difference is that the mere message does not allow us to experience its truth – we either accept it or we don’t.

A theme is the understanding that the author seeks to communicate through the work.

Theme

What exactly is this elusive thing called theme?

The theme of a fable is its moral. The theme of a parable is its teaching. The theme of a piece of fiction is its view about life and how people behave.

In fiction, the theme is not intended to teach or preach. In fact, it is not presented directly at all. You extract it from the characters, action, and setting that make up the story. In other words, you must figure out the theme yourself.

The writer's task is to communicate on a common ground with the reader. Although the particulars of your experience may be different from the details of the story, the general underlying truths behind the story may be just the connection that both you and the writer are seeking

students the following definition of theme: the perception about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader.

story plot
The Elements of Plot Development

If an author writes, "The king died and then the queen died," there is no plot for a story. But by writing, "The king died and then the queen died of grief," the writer has provided a plot line for a story.

A plot is a causal sequence of events, the "why" for the things that happen in the story. The plot draws the reader into the character's lives and helps the reader understand the choices that the characters make.

Plot point

Plot and narrative: the twin rails of the novel

'Narrative,' says John Gregory Dunne, 'is not plot.' And he's right. Here is how I understand his statement, and what it means when writing a novel.

Plot is what happens. Narrative is what the reader sees and hears of what happens – and how he sees and hears it.

In some novels, plot and narrative can be very closely aligned. In others, considerable distance can separate what is happening and what the story is telling of it. In murder mysteries, for instance, the plot – what is really going on, and why – is obscured by the detective's narrative – what she is telling us of what she sees, learns, and suspects. There's actually a whole lot more going on, but she will only know the full picture right at the end. In other sorts of stories, the plot and the narrative can be parallel, as what is really happening, say, a couple are getting divorced (the plot), is related is through the eyes of their eight-year-old son (his is the narrative), who doesn't really understand what is actually going on.

Why Can't Hollywood Create New Plots?
Five Plot Formulas Frequently Used by Hollywood

Jul 23, 2009 Laura Steer

Hollywood writers, whether consciously or subconsciously, nearly always employ predetermined plots and storylines known as "myths."

As it applies to pop culture, the word “myth” does not refer to a fictitious tale; it refers to a big story that has deep meaning and is organized for a group of people. Because the meanings and messages of such stories are universal, they are utilized over and over again by Hollywood. Each of these well-known myths has a plot structure and certain rules that it follows, but the specific characters and details are changeable enough that consumers (i.e. the general public) aren’t aware that they are continuously being fed the same core stories. Some of these stories include Wisdom of the Rustic, Possibility of Success, Conspiracy, Coming of Messiah, and Value of Challenge.

Myth #1: Wisdom of the Rustic
In this myth, the protagonist (often wealthy or educated) is faced with an obstacle that he is unable to overcome until he meets the Rustic. The Rustic is a wise character who is quirky and unconventional. (Example: Good Will Hunting.)

Myth #2: Possibility of Success
This myth is nearly opposite of the first. Whereas the protagonist of the Wisdom of the Rustic is a well-off protagonist gaining assistance from an outside source, the main character of this myth is often underprivileged and gains success solely by his own means and determination. An alternate name for this myth is Pull Yourself Up by Your Own Bootstraps. (Example: Erin Brokavich.)

Myth #3: Conspiracy
The overarching theme of this myth is that important, powerful people have a significantly dangerous secret. A number of people—often an entire population—are in jeopardy because the secret is being kept from them. The protagonist knows or discovers the secret and is then faced with the responsibility of enlightenment. (Example: Conspiracy Theory)

Myth #4: Coming of Messiah
Similar to the myth of Conspiracy, which hinges on secrecy and illumination, this myth features a society in trouble, but the survival of said society depends upon the coming of one person who will turn everything around and fix the problem. (Example: The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe.)

MIDPOINT CLIMAX

- (60 minutes into a 2 hour movie, 200 pages into a 400 page book)

- Is a major shift in the dynamics of the story. Something huge will be revealed; something goes disastrously wrong; someone close to the hero/ine dies, intensifying her or his commitment.

- Can also be a huge defeat, which requires a recalculation and a new plan of attack.

- Completely changes the game and forces the hero/ine to develop a new game plan

- Locks the hero/ine into a situation or action

- Is a point of no return.

- Can be a “now it’s personal” loss

- Can be sex at 60 – the lovers finally get together, only to open up a whole new world of problems

- May start a TICKING CLOCK.

- The Midpoint is not necessarily just one scene – it can be a progression of scenes and revelations that include a climactic scene, a complete change of location, a major revelation, a major reversal – all or any combination of the above.

Τôκyô mοחοgatari (1953) 1/13

TOKYO STORY

Thoughts from Ozu
I tried to represent the collapse of the Japanese family system through showing children growing up. The melodramatic element in Tokyo Story is one of the strongest in my works.

As in The Only Son, the parents of Tokyo Story are not satisfied with their children's Tokyo. However, the dramatic tension and the confrontation between mother and son in The Only Son sink into the interior. They are softened by resignation and tolerance, and are confirmed and accepted. This change from seeking, to a conscious attitude, is probably due to the fact that Ozu had changed his point of view from the children's one to the parents' one, achieving maturity and harmony with the world, according to his own age. Ozu depicted the feast in his film as a transition of time. Of course, Ozu understands the meaning of the feast as change, that is, as transience. The morning after the loss of his wife, the old father Shukichi says: "That was a beautiful daybreak today," and "Today is going to be hot again." These lines were often discussed and interrupted. However, they should rather be considered as stock expressions.

Personal Thoughts and Comments
Widely considered among the greatest films in the history of Japanese cinema, Ozu's 1953 Tokyo Story stands as a true masterpiece of filmmaking. Tokyo Story is a reflective film about morals, selfishness, and youth's treatment (or mistreatment) of the elderly. But it's also a deeply moving love story, while never being manipulative or over-sentimental as Ozu achieves the most moving emotions through his trademark simplistic style. The film's final moments and images represent the power of love, and the need for human connection in a way that is unforgettably sad - captured through Ozu's masterful cinematic language and of course Setsuko Hara's stunning performance. Every single shot is beautifully and expressively composed and Tokyo Story may feature Ozu's most prominent use of his defining "pillow shots". At the core this is a film of the inevitability of lifes progression. This is expressed in both the changes of a postwar Japanese society and more specifically of the family. By presenting these daily life cycles and changes through generations of a family, Ozu has created a film that is widely universal. Ultimately the film poetically captures this in the end as the family has been destroyed and we come back full circle to where it began. Tokyo Story is one of the most moving films ever made. It understandings and complexities of human emotion and behavior is flawless and under the minimalist direction of Ozu's style as well as the superb performances by his cast, Tokyo Story emerges as one of the truly great film achievements in the history of world cinema. A classic film to cherish and to revisit.

n fiction, a plot point is a story event that spins the action around in a new, unexpected direction. Plot points serve to keep the action moving forward and the story fresh.

What is the Inciting Incident?
Plot Point I and The Inciting Incident: Always Remember the Difference
Jun 4th 2008, 08:16 PM 7 raters

As many of you know, a feature film screenplay is broadly divided into three acts:

1. The beginning (Setup) that is 22 to 30 pages long,
2. Middle (confrontation or conflict) that is about 60 pages long, and
3. End (Resolution) that is about 25 to 30 pages long.

But what most fresh screenwriters don’t seem to understand correctly and make a technical mistake in is the first act (the beginning or the setup) where their writing indicates their misunderstanding of the difference between the inciting incident and plot point I, the two major highs in the first act.

Let’s have a look at the definitions in order to make it easy for us to properly differentiate between the two screenplay elements and consequently be able to write Act I of our screenplays in the most effective way possible:

What is the Inciting Incident?

An inciting incident is the event that throws the everyday life of the protagonist out of balance. The event --

-- must NOT has to do anything with the will of the protagonist,

-- doesn’t necessarily have to be the reaction of something the protagonist did at the start of the screenplay, and

-- must NOT be the reaction of something the protagonist did in his life that existed before the start of the screenplay.

The Five Key Turning Points of All Successful Scripts

Here’s the Mid-Point defined: new information that enters the story squarely in the middle of it, that changes the contextual experience and understanding of either the reader, the hero, or both.

Theme: An Emotional Argument

by Melanie Anne Phillips
creator StoryWeaver, co-creator Dramatica

It is one thing to tell your audience, "Greed leads to self-destruction." It is another thing to prove it! Using a premise as the basis for your theme provides you with clear idea of what you hope to say, but it provides precious little guidance in how to say it.

Dramatica focuses on the Emotional Argument as the way to prove your point without resorting to cut-and-dried, ham-handed, generalizations and platitudes. Here’s how it works:

"Greed," in our example premise, does not really stand alone, but has a counter-point of "Generosity." Although the focus of our story will be on Greed, by also showing the contrasting impact of Generosity, we create a thematic conflict pitting point against counter-point.

In our story, act by act, we need to explore both point and counterpoint several times to see the relative worth of each. BUT, we should never compare both DIRECTLY. Rather, the thematic point should be explored on several occasions to see how it fares. Interwoven in other scenes or moments, the counterpoint needs to be separately explored to see how it fares on its own. As the story progresses, the audience will begin to tally-up the independent value of each, averaging its benefits with its drawbacks. By the end of the story, when all examples of the worth of both point and counter-point have been presented, the audience will arrive at an emotional conclusion that one is better than the other.

For example, Greed may seem to have a greatly negative impact in its first appearance, but slightly positive results in its second. A third appearance might see it as being neutral. Overall, the average of all three appearances rates it as slightly negative.

In contrast, Generosity might appear ALSO greatly negative at first, then highly positive, then slightly positive. In the end, it averages out as slightly positive. The conclusion for the audience is that Greed is somewhat worse than Generosity.

Emotions don’t see things as black and white. By avoiding the simple blanket statement made by a premise and "arguing" the relative worth of point and counter-point over the course of your story, you will create an "emotional argument" which will sway your audience to your point of view, rather than trying to hit it over the head.

http://pikozoblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/09_13.html

Happy Ending - The protagonist achieves the “outer” and “inner” goal. In other words, the hero gets the gold and becomes a better person.

Bittersweet - The protagonist achieves the “inner” goal, but fails to get the “outer” goal. In Rain Man, Charlie doesn’t get “ownership” of his brother, but he does grow from a self-centered narcissist to a more selfless brother.

Cautionary Tale - The protagonist gets the “outer” goal, but fails to achieve the “inner” transformation. In Citizen Kane, Charles Foster gets the power and wealth (outer), but dies empty and unfulfilled (“Rosebud” represented the innocence and joy of his childhood).

Tragic - The protagonist achieves neither the “inner” nor the “outer” goal, Leaving Las Vegas was, in my opinion, a tragedy (although, you could argue that the protagonist’s goal was to “drink himself to death” — which he did accomplish).

A story is a argument

Winning isn’t everything, and these stories are meaningful representations of that reality. But serving up a downer ending should not be considered something to avoid. Looking beyond the success explored through character and plot in these stories is the success these films experienced when released to the general public. Two of them won Oscars for their masterful writing, while the third made over half a billion dollars at the box office. While the Main Characters of these films may have gone home sad, the filmmakers certainly did not.

Audiences appreciate and embrace these kinds of stories because they shed light on why things are the way they are. People crave these stories because they crave meaningful conclusions to their endeavors. The drive to win at any cost is something every audience member can recognize and empathize with and is one of the reasons why these films remain so powerful.

Simply put, a story with a meaningful ending helps to explain why.

The Power of Myth

Sort By : Title | Author

The Ultra-Condensed Classic Books
Rationale:
Research shows that teaching students about the plan or structure of a story leads to improved comprehension (Trabasso & Bouchard, 2002; Armbruster, Lehr, & Osborn, 2001). The structure or plan of narrative text is often referred to as story grammar. Story grammar involves three basic elements: setting, plot, and theme. A story is set in motion through characters presented with problems that they must solve. To facilitate comprehension and memory of stories, students need to know about the general structure of stories. One tool, teachers can use to help students understand story grammar is the story map. Story maps are templates that provide students a concrete framework for identifying the elements of narrative stories.

The basic elements of a story map are:

Setting – when and where the story occurs
Characters - the most important players in a story
Problem/Conflict - the focal point around which the story is centered
Events - the attempts by the main character(s) to resolve the problem or conflict
Resolution/Solution/Conclusion - the outcome of the attempts to resolve the problem or conflict
Theme - main idea or moral of the story
How to Use the Strategy:
To effectively use the strategy, teachers should model how to identify story grammar elements. First, introduce the story map by explaining the importance of story grammar. Most stories have certain elements in common. Remind students that most stories have a beginning, which includes the time of the story, where it takes place, and introduces the main character(s). An event then sets a problem or conflict in motion, which is followed by attempts to reach the goal or resolve the conflict. Finally, the goal or conflict is resolved in some way and the main character(s) react to the outcome.

Next, model how to complete a story map. Questions can be used to guide discussion:

Setting – Where did the story occur? When did the story occur?
Character – Who is the story mainly about? Who is the main character?
Problem/Conflict – What major problem does the main character face? What does this character hope to achieve?
Events – What did the main characters do?
Resolution/Conclusion – Does the character solve the problem? How does the character solve the problem? Is the character defeated by the problem? Does the character learn to live with the problem? How did the story end? How did the main character feel?

Strategies for Reading Comprehension
History Frames/Story Maps

When looking at stories and novels, students are often asked to focus on the "elements" of story: setting, characters, plot, and theme, among others.
When we look at historical events, we're interested in the same things:
where and when did the event take place?
who was involved?
what was the problem or goal that set events in motion?
what were the key events?
how was it resolved?
and, for theme, so what? what's the universal truth, the reason this matters?
[For you science teachers our there who have stopped by this site, you might also consider taking advantage of the traditional story map (if your students are already using these maps in other classes) to have them write up their lab reports ... see the chart below.]
How Do These Frames & Maps Work?

Characters: Who are the people who were involved in this? Which ones played major roles, and which ones were minor?
Setting: Where and when did this event take place? Over what period of time?
Plot: This section is broken into three parts:
Problem/Goal: What set events in motion? What problem arose, or what were the key players after?
Events/Episodes: This is to get students to focus on summarizing...they focus on the key steps or events that capture the progress of the situation.
Resolution/Outcome: How was the problem solved? Was the goal attained? (It's probably pretty important to stress to students that they should go back to the problem or goal they identified in order to say how it was resolved or whether it was met.)
Theme. I think of this as the "so what?" of a history frame or story map. You might think of it as the universal truth or revelation, the larger meaning or importance, the moral, the "what we've learned from this," and so on. A wonderful teacher named Donna Feary suggested to me that the theme ought to be the way that a student relates the event to his own life, and we decided that perhaps the Theme can be divided into two components:
a universal truth
a personal truth
Seems like a good idea!
