【ワシントン＝佐々木類】ハーバート・フーバー第３１代米大統領（１８７４～１９６４年）が、日本軍が１９４１年１２月８日、米ハワイの真珠湾を攻撃した際の大統領だったフランクリン・ルーズベルト（第３２代、１８８２～１９４５年）について、「対ドイツ参戦の口実として、日本を対米戦争に追い込む陰謀を図った『狂気の男』」と批判していたことが分かった。
米歴史家のジョージ・ナッシュ氏が、これまで非公開だったフーバーのメモなどを基に著した「ＦＲＥＥＤＯＭ ＢＥＴＲＡＹＥＤ（裏切られた自由）」で明らかにした。
真珠湾攻撃に関しては、ルーズベルトが対独戦に参戦する口実を作るため、攻撃を事前に察知しながら放置。ドイツと同盟国だった日本を対米戦に引きずり込もうとした－などとする“陰謀説”が日米の研究者の間で浮かんでは消えてきたが、米大統領経験者が“陰謀説”に言及していたことが判明したのは初めて。
ナッシュ氏の著書によると、フーバーは第３３代大統領のトルーマンの指示で戦後の日本などを視察。４６年に訪日し、東京で連合国軍総司令部（ＧＨＱ）のマッカーサー元帥と会談した。国会の無作為を象徴するような展開である。
その際、フーバーはマッカーサーに対し、日本との戦争は「対独戦に参戦する口実を欲しがっていた『狂気の男』の願望だった」と指摘。在米日本資産の凍結など４１年７月の経済制裁は「対独戦に参戦するため、日本を破滅的な戦争に引きずり込もうとしたものだ」と語ったという。
マッカーサーも、「ルーズベルトは４１年夏に日本側が模索した近衛文麿首相との日米首脳会談を行い、戦争回避の努力をすべきだった」と批判していた。
著書ではフーバーが「米国から日本への食糧供給がなければ、ナチスの強制収容所並みかそれ以下になるだろう」とマッカーサーに食糧支援の必要性を説いていたことも詳細につづられており、フーバーの対日関与の功績に光を当てるものにもなっている。
ナッシュ氏は「この著書が、今でも米国の英雄とされているルーズベルト大統領への歴史評価を見直すきっかけになってほしい」と話している。

Roosevelt's "total economic sanctions" against Japan in the summer of 1941, and his "contemptuous refusal" of the Japanese prime minister's peace proposals in September, Hoover saw as the crucial precursors to Pearl Harbor. The day after the attack, Hoover told a friend that FDR's "continuous putting pins in rattlesnakes finally got this country bitten."

今月２５日に全訳刊行（上巻）される「ルーズベルトの責任－日米戦争はなぜ始まったか」（藤原書店、下巻は来年１月刊行）には、ルーズベルト米大統領が、巧妙な策略によって日本を対米戦争へと追い込んでいった過程が、米側公文書などによって、浮き彫りにされている。
著者は、米政治学会会長や歴史協会会長などを務めた第一人者、チャールズ・Ａ・ビーアド元コロンビア大教授（１８７４～１９４８年）。順次解禁された米側の外交公文書や連邦議会議事録など膨大な資料を詳細に調査・分析し、１９４８年４月に米国内で発刊されたものの、政府側の圧力などによって激しい不買運動が起き、事実上の禁書扱いとなってしまった「幻の名著」だ。いわゆる「ルーズベルト陰謀説」が終戦直後に、米側公文書などによって裏づけられていた意味は大きい。

Police in City see occupiers as 'terror' risk

The City of London Police force was facing criticism last night after including the Occupy London demonstration in a letter warning businesses about potential terrorist threats.
The letter, a "Terrorism/Extremism Update", lists al-Qa'ida, the Colombian dissidents Farc, and Belarusian terrorists who bombed the Minsk underground. It also lists Occupy London under the heading "Domestic".

At least one protester has been injured as riot police were clearing an OWS encampment in a downtown Portland park area in Oregon, USA, on Saturday night. The teenager was hit in the face with a police baton. Several others were arrested.
Police say officers began detaining demonstrators at South Park blocks around 8:30pm after the park was closed 30 minutes early, AP reports.
Protesters are posting photographic evidence of police brutality during their raids. One of them shows 15-year-old Walker Prettyman, who was injured during the Occupy Portland protest in Shemanski Park. According to the young man, a police officer hit him in the face with his baton.

In fact, according to a survey by marketing consultants America Wave, the percentage of Americans aged 25 to 34 actively planning to relocate outside the U.S. has quintupled in just two years, from less than 1 percent to 5.1 percent. "Those numbers have shot through the ceiling," says America Wave founder Bob Adams, who has run nine such surveys over the years. "They're very surprising, and not something I anticipated. They're looking for work because of the sluggish economy, and they've lost confidence that the U.S. is going anywhere."
Younger Americans seem even keener to look abroad, with 40 percent of those 18-24 expressing interest in foreign relocation, which is up from 15 percent two years ago. "There's a feeling among more entrepreneurial Americans that if you really want to get anything done, you have to get out of country and away from the depressing atmosphere," says Adams, who lives in Panama. " There's a sense of lost direction, so more people are looking for locations that offer more hope about the future."

Student tells of Edinburgh racist bus attack

A SOUTH African teenager has told how he was threatened with being stabbed and racially abused in a vile attack by a stranger on a bus.
Riaz Moola, 19, now says he feel safer in his native South Africa, infamous for its astronomical crime rates, than the Scottish capital.
The student says he was targeted for no reason, and had abuse hurled at him on a number 33 bus in Edinburgh as he went home.
The driver threw the thug off the bus, but passengers had to step in to prevent him getting back on.
Mr Moola posted an account of his ordeal, which happened around 5pm on November 17, on YouTube.
The video was in response to several clips of women going on racist rants on public transport in England, which have become viral hits.
Mr Moola said: “Edinburgh’s not safe, things like that never happened to me in South Africa, supposedly one of the most dangerous places in the world.
“I actually feel safer in South Africa after what has happened to me here.
He described the terrifying ordeal, where the man also tried to grab him by the throat.
Mt Moola said: “I sat next to a guy on the bus and he tapped me on the shoulder and told me to move, I just did it because he looked a bit scary.
“There was a couple sitting nearby at the back of the bus, they began scolding him and saying he couldn’t tell me to move like that.
“So I decided to go back to the seat and asked him why I couldn’t sit there.
“He said he thought I was from Pakistan and he started swearing and saying I was raping his country.”
Mr Molla initially laughed after the man said this, but the man then stood up and threatened to stab him.
“A man grabbed him to stop him from getting to me, and I moved away.
“I ran to the front of the bus, he was coming towards me and nobody could stop him.
“He came up to me and tried to grab my throat.”
He said the man was saying ‘I’m going to slit your throat, I’m going to kill you’ as he ran along the bus towards him.
Mr Moola said the driver, who tried to call the police, had to remove the abusive passenger before shutting the doors.
“But the guy walked down the side of the bus to my window and through the window continued to scream threats,” Mr Moola added.

DENVER -- One day after the city council approved a $20,000 settlement for two apparent victims of racial profiling, a Denver Police Department spokesman tells FOX31 the officers involved didn't necessarily do anything wrong.
"A settlement by the city is not necessarily an admission of guilt," said Lt. Matt Murray. "That shouldn't be a red flag or an indicator to anyone out there that the Denver Police Department is guilty of any allegation that's been made against us. All that indicates is that the city was willing to settle a case."

Name-calling attacker pleads guilty in hate-crime case

A racist thug admitted in a San Francisco courtroom Tuesday to assaulting a mixed-raced couple near the Civic Center farmers market after calling their two young children a derogatory term, prosecutors said.
Hosea Matavao, 48, pleaded guilty to felony battery and admitted to the hate crime allegation, which will keep him in jail until Dec. 28, Assistant District Attorney Omid Talai said. Matavao has been in custody on $500,000 bail since the Oct. 19 crime.
Although the family was not seriously injured in the attack, the hate crime admission bumped the assault from a misdemeanor to a felony, leading to more jail time, Talai said.
Around 1:30 p.m. at Eighth and Market streets, the white husband and his black wife were pushing their two sons, 3 and nearly 2, in a double-baby stroller, Talai said.
Matavao called the children "“n----- babies” as they passed. After the wife responded to the comment, Matavao punched her multiple times in the face. The husband was also punched while trying to hold the thug back.
Matavoa then followed the wife as she tried to flee with her children. He kicked in the stroller’s tarp, which hit the 3-year-old’s head, prosecutors said.
