Nativity Scene Is a ‘Superstition,’ Says Atheist Group, But Santa Can Stay

Email38Smaller FontTextLarger Text|Print
The Freedom From Religion Foundation has taken offense with a nativity scene displayed outside a courthouse in downtown Athens, Texas.
The Keep Athens Beautiful Committee has been putting up the nativity scene since 2002, and County Judge Richard Sanders says it’s not violating any law, according to ABC News affiliate KBMT.
Because we have all the other decorations, it’s legal,” Sanders said. “Our county attorney has looked into it.”
A Henderson County resident complained to the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin-based atheist group, and the foundation notified the committee that the nativity scene was in violation of federal law. The foundation asked for the baby Jesus to be removed, or for a sign to be put up next to his crib that would read: “At this season of the winter solstice may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”
But while some believe Santa is “but myth and superstition,” no one has asked for a sign to be placed next to him, clarifying his non-existence. The town has several other seasonal decorations up, such as reindeer, garden gnomes and snowmen, but the nativity scene is the only decoration has been criticized as a religious symbol. As for Santa, he’s more of a tradition than a religious icon, so the foundation has not taken issue with him.
Henderson County Commissioner Joe Hall says he’ll fight to keep the nativity scene in place.
“Don’t come down here and tell me there is no God. This nation is a Christian nation regardless of what those fruit loops and fruitcakes in Washington D.C. say. Hell will freeze over before I vote to have it removed,” Hall said.

Playing with fire: Obama's threat to China
Obama says US influence will turn from the Middle East towards the "vast potential of the Asia-Pacific region".
Michael Klare Last Modified: 10 Dec 2011

Indeed, as President Obama said in Canberra, the US is now in a position to begin to refocus its military capabilities elsewhere. "After a decade in which we fought two wars that cost us dearly," he declared, "the United States is turning our attention to the vast potential of the Asia-Pacific region."

By securing naval dominance of the South China Sea and adjacent waters, the Obama administration evidently aims to acquire the 21st century energy equivalent of 20th century nuclear blackmail. Push us too far, the policy implies, and we'll bring your economy to its knees by blocking your flow of vital energy supplies.

Is the European dream over?
Europe's current crisis stems from a lack of cross-border solidarity or any sense of belonging in the supra-national EU.
Ian Buruma Last Modified: 10 Dec 2011

Is this possible in a supra-national body like the EU? If the answer is no, it may be best to restore the sovereignty of individual European nation-states, give up on the common currency, and abandon a dream that is threatening to become a nightmare.

This is what the more radical Eurosceptics in Britain think, having never shared the EU dream to begin with. It is easy to dismiss this as typical British chauvinism - the insular attitude of a people living in splendid isolation. But, in Britain's defence, its citizens have had a longer and more successful democratic history than have most continental Europeans

NASA Has Lost Hundreds of Its Moon Rocks, New Report Says
by Denise Chow, SPACE.com Staff WriterDate: 09 December 2011

NASA has lost or misplaced more than 500 of the moon rocks its Apollo astronauts collected and brought back to Earth, according to a new agency report.

In an audit released Thursday (Dec. 8), NASA's Office of Inspector General states that the agency "lacks sufficient controls over its loans of moon rocks and other astromaterials, which increases the risk that these unique resources may be lost."

The report stresses the importance of maintaining stricter guidelines for the release of lunar materials to researchers, and more meticulous inventory procedures for their storage and return.

Two Canadian Men Face Charges For Violent Racist Attacks On Non-Whites

Mounties say they’ve put a dent in organized hate in British Columbia after arresting two alleged neo-Nazis for racist, violent attacks dating back to 2008.

The two men are accused of belonging to the B.C.-faction of the white supremacist group Blood and Honour, which has tentacles around the world. Their crimes, police say, occurred in Vancouver.

Robertson De Chazal, 25, is charged with aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm in connection with two incidents, while Shawn MacDonald, 30, faces three counts of assault. Both are from the Vancouver area.

De Chazal is one of three people accused in an apparently random October 2009 attack.

Police say a 25-year-old Filipino man, who fell asleep on a discarded couch outside after a night of drinking, was doused in accelerant and set on fire. He suffered burns to his arms, neck and head.

The second charge relates to a beating one month earlier in which a black man was knocked unconscious.

The charges against MacDonald relate to incidents in 2008 and 2010 that injured a black man, a Hispanic man and an aboriginal woman.

Neither MacDonald nor De Chazal has a previous criminal history.

UN researcher slams ‘racist’ Oslo police
Published: 09 Dec 2011 06:22 GMT+1

Shuaib Lwasa was stopped near the city’s Central Station in October as he stretched his legs during a break in a meeting with Norway’s Climate and Pollution Agency, newspaper Aftenposten reports.

Lwasa, a researcher with the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), said a police officer asked him where he was going and requested that he show identification. Before he had time to answer, the officer went through his pockets as passers-by looked on, the paper said.

Shaken by the incident, Lwasa wrote a complaint to the police demanding a formal apology for the “disrespectful” and “humiliating” encounter.

The Norwegian government’s climate agency also took the police to task, asking if they should now start warning future guests of the risk that they risked falling foul of the forces of law and order.

The police clarified in a letter that it was permitted “in certain situations” to search somebody for their identity papers, but admitted that in this case it was “incorrect and shouldn’t have been carried out.”

Lwasa accepted the subsequent apology but remained angry at what he described as “lies” by the police officer who stopped him on Karl Johans Gate.

Critics Play the Race Card on New Comedy ‘The Sitter’
by Christian Toto

It’s bad enough the new Jonah Hill comedy “The Sitter” is getting blasted by most movie critics. More than a few film scribes are claiming the R-rated comedy is racist to boot.
Let’s back up a moment. The film casts Hill as a slacker forced to babysit three precocious teens. Consider it “Adventures in Babysitting” with a very foul mouth.

The foursome get mixed up with an effeminate drug dealer (Sam Rockwell) as well as some thuggish black characters (including rapper Method Man). It’s here where some critics are crying foul. Consider the following comments:
The movie tries to mine laughs from its mincing homos and scary black people, then excuses its racist, prejudiced stereotypes by making one of the kids gay and giving Jonah an African-American love interest (Kylie Bunbury). See? We’re only kidding! We don’t really mean it! This is the Birth of a Nation of low-brow comedies. – Rene Rodriguez, The Miami Herald
The movie’s also a serious racial offender, parading a gang of black actors around as hoods stealing cars, talking jive or looking for a fight. – David Germain, AP
“The Sitter” seems to have a good heart, so why all the glib racism? Rodrigo is no less a walking ethnic joke than the Asian exchange student in John Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles,” and there are way too many scenes of angry black people turning all smiles at Hill’s jive talk. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday
Film critics play the race card almost as readily as mainstream reporters covering Tea Party events. The tricky aspect to “The Sitter,” and to most comedies in general, is that they routinely mine humor from cultural stereotypes – the husband who can’t change a diaper, the housewife who wouldn’t know a linebacker from a free safety, etc.
What matters in “The Sitter” is that the ethnic characters in question are allowed to grow to some degree. The young Latino boy in the main character’s charge evolves over the course of the movie. So do the black characters who confront Hill’s character mid-film.
Had each character stuck to the initial script the racist charges would have more merit.

Police Commissioner's Order Was Not Enough: NYPD Continues to Make Thousands of Illegal, Racially Biased Pot Arrests
While arrests have dropped ever so slightly since Police Commissioner Kelly issued his order, the NYPD is still using stop-and-frisk to make thousands of unwarranted pot arrests.
December 8, 2011 |

Last September, in the face of rising pressure to end racially biased, illegal and costly marijuana arrests in NYC – which have skyrocketed to more than 50,000 annually – NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly issued an uncharacteristically stern order to officers, directing them to follow the state’s existing decriminalization law. But new data released this week show that while arrests have dropped ever so slightly -- just 13% -- since Kelly issued his order, NYPD is continuing with its marijuana arrest crusade.

In the state of New York, since 1977, possession of a small amount of marijuana has been a mere violation, which is a non-arrestable offense – unless it’s burning or in plain public view. But in 2010 one out of every seven arrests in New York City was for marijuana possession in public view – even though the vast majority of the people arrested did not actually possess marijuana in public view. Research by Queens College professor Harry Levine and valuable investigative work by WNYC’s Ailsa Chang clearly demonstrates that the vast majority of the marijuana arrests in New York City – up to 75 or even 80 percent in some precincts – are the result of illegal searches and false charges.

A stray dog in Russia’s Far East stood on guard beside his dead mate in biting cold for over two weeks. The “Yakutian Hachiko” tried to warm her up with his own body.
The two stray dogs had been guarding local garages until one of them was allegedly poisoned. The other refused to leave his dead pal’s side even when the temperature dropped to -50 degrees Celsius.
He was nicknamed the "Yakutian Hachiko" after a Japanese dog remembered for his remarkable loyalty to his dead owner, waiting for him at a train station for seven years.

Health ministry to offer grief counseling to Tohoku orphans
Kyodo

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry is planning to start providing grief counseling to children early next year in the three northeastern Japan prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, the hardest hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami where over 1,500 children are estimated to have lost parents, sources familiar with the move said Saturday.
