Racial beatings in San Jacinto Valley linked to Obama election, police say

Local police believe five recent attacks on minorities in the San Jacinto Valley may stem from a backlash to the election of Barack Obama as the first black president in U.S. history.

Hemet police and Riverside County gang detectives said the beatings, which occurred in the weeks following Obama's election, appeared to be racially motivated and they fear more racial violence during his presidency.

The attacks and rhetoric from the white supremacist group involved in the beatings is part of a larger insurgence of hate groups throughout the nation, especially in the Inland region and Southern California, experts said.

Confidential police informants and the Web site of a local white supremacist group have pointed to anger about the election of the country's first black president, said Sgt. Mark Richards of the Hemet/San Jacinto Regional Gang Task Force.

"All of these attacks occurred after the election and we believe there's some connection to the election of an African-American," Richards said. "All of a sudden these attacks occurred and we don't think it's a coincidence."

Brian Levin, a Cal State San Bernardino criminology professor, said the greatest concern is fringe activists who may turn violent. He said fundamentalists may take the inauguration and presidency as a sign of everything they fear and an opportunity to attack blacks, Hispanics and Jews.

"To elect a biracial president is the worst thing for these white supremacists. He's their antichrist," Levin said. "These people can't get to him, so the fear is they'll get to someone close to him symbolically."

Nationally, federal authorities have been tracking crime that might be associated with anger over the election. In New York, three teens were charged with beating four black men with lead pipes out of anger on Election Day.

However, while experts agree about the increase in hate group activity, some say the activity may not be a direct result of Obama's election.

Experts say anger over the economic downturn and illegal immigration could be larger issues.魚拓

　他方、確かに、ヘイトクライムは増加しているが、しかし、不況や不法移民の増加のせいであって、オバマ氏の大統領就任とは関係があるか、どうかはまだ、わからない、という。

　どっちにしてもひどい状況ですな。

人種ハラスメント

Moyo was the only black youth to travel to the former Nazi concentration camp in Poland earlier this month as part of Coventry's Youth Investment Project, an ongoing training scheme designed to counter behavioural problems among black as well as white youths. There are 10 youths involved, and three of them are black. On racial abuse issues - a major part of the project - they are far more likely to be victims than perpetrators.

None of the youths involved in the project has been convicted of any crimes, but they are from families where low educational attainment and antisocial behaviour have been identified, and children in some of these families are thought to be under racist influences.

Moyo's family have suffered some racial harassment It was just knocking on the door, calling us names and running away at first," he recalls. "But when we retaliated, the car windscreen was smashed. I've discovered that it's better to try to make friends."
Part of the thinking in the youth project is to encourage integration through familiarity with each other. In Moyo's case, it helps that he's good enough at football to have been selected for Coventry City's academy. But you only have to watch the easy interaction between himself and the other two boys to realise that he is fully accepted - by them, at least.

記事そのものは、若者にアウシュビッツ見学させることの教育効果についての記事ですけど、その中で
racial harrassment　人種的ハラスメントという言葉が目をひいた。

　黒人の子供で、その家族は人種的ハラスメントを受けることがあり、初めのうちはドアをノックして、悪口叩かれれ、逃げる、といった程度だったが、やり返したら、自動車を窓をぶっ壊された。で、仲良くなって方がいいと思った、と。

　で、白人の子供たちと互いに実際交流して親しみを増やすことで、統合を勧めようとして、こうして、白人黒人がいっしょに見学するツアーを組んでいると。

　で、そうすた交流を通じて、少なくともそうやって接触をした友人からは全面的に受け入れられた、と。


　セクシャルハラスメントという言葉はすでに日本語になっていますけど、このような人種的ハラスメントというのもある。

　Japan　Probe　でオバマ氏を真似て顔を黒塗りしている日本人の人たちの記事を掲載していますけど、これなど、悪意はないにせよ、人種ハラスメントになりかねない。

　つまり、白人や黒人がめちゃくちゃ黄色い化粧をして、麻生首相の真似をして、お笑いをしたり、あるいは、なにかの販売をしたとしたら、個人にもよるでしょうけど、不快に思うに日本人もいるかもしれないですねーーそれと同じです。

　よく外人の人が不快に思うのが、道で外人さんとであって「外人！！！外人！！」と驚かれる。これも人種ハラスメントと言えるのではないでしょうか？
　日本人が外国にいって、出会い頭、「おー、フォリナー！！！とか「おーイミグラント！！！！」とかいわれて驚かれることが何度もあったら、やっぱ、気分悪く思う日本人もいるのではないでしょうか？


　セクシャルハラスメントという言葉が流布して、以前に比べ、かなりこうしたことに対する意識は高まってきてはいると思いますけど、
セクシャルハラスメントと同様に、人種的ハラスメントということもあるのだ、ということも知り、またこの言葉ももっと流布させていいと思います。

外国人観光客の受け入れ

いろんな点で参考になるから外国人の方もできれば、みていただきたい。

まず、日本の旅館業者が一番不安に思っているのは言語。
外国人が嫌いというわけではない。

それでも在日カナダ人の方が、風呂の入り方の英語パンフレットなども作ってくれたり、ちょっとしたアドバイスや励ましをして、日本人旅館業者と在日外国人、そして来日外国人観光客とがうまく交流して双方に利益と喜びをもたらしている。

日本人と在日外国人などの協力の仕方のよい見本になる、と思う。

NHKの番組で、風呂で、外人が額に汗を「しぼり」で拭いて、アナウンサーが「汗を拭いて、風呂のなかに？？」と驚いたのをみて、どこが悪いんだ、という手紙を紹介している。

これ、どういう場面だったか、有道センセはわかっているのか？
ちょっと普通の日本人でも想像がつかない。
まず、「おしぼり」をもって風呂に入るってのがわからない。
タオルなのかもしれない。そして、風呂にはいって額の汗をタオルで拭くのは全然可笑しくない。おかしくないの普通のアナウンサーが可笑しい、と表現したとすれば、当該外国人がした他の何か指して、びっくりしたと考えるのが順当だろう。

ま、それはさておき、コメントを見てみると、

It mentions not wearing or bringing a towel into the bath. There is no mention about wiping sweat.

Unfortunately, it also fails to mention not shitting in the bath or not being drunk and falling asleep at the shower with the water going all night, things that our Japanese guests here at Kamesei Ryokan have done in the past. Bad bath manners go both ways.

旅館業者がつくった外国人向け風呂場でのマナーのパンフのリンクをはって、風呂にタオルをもっていくな、とは書いていないし、汗をふいてはいけない、とも書いていない、とーーーそりゃそうだろうな。
さらに、「不幸なことに、風呂でうんこしちゃいけないとか、シャワーを一晩中出しっぱなしで、酔っぱらって寝てはいけない、といった私のホテルの亀清旅館で過去に日本人客がしたようなことにも言及していない、と。

ばか？

　風呂場のマナーで風呂の中で大便しないでください、なんて書く馬鹿いるか？マナー以前の問題だろう。
　仮に英語で書いてみろ。おまいら、外国人差別だあああ、とか言うだろう。
　そういう日本人がいたから、そう書きたければ亀清旅館でかけよ---外国人ではなく、日本人がしたっていいたいんだろ？だったら、

日本人の方は風呂のなかで大便しないように注意しください。

とかさ。


　なんで外国人が日本の社会でうまくやっていけるように親切に英語で書いたマナーパンフまで、そうやって文句言うんだろうなああああ。

Before entering the onsen, my colleagues would pour hot water on their body. No soap, no shower; just hot water in a bucket and a splash.

Yes, I was shocked too the first time I saw a bunch of Japanese do this at an onsen while I, the foreign barbarian, carefully soaped up and washed off first. Hypocrites!

外国人が風呂に入る前に、石けんで体をきれいに洗ってから温泉に入るのに、日本人はじゃぶっと体に湯をかけるだけで、温泉にはいるのをみてびっくりこいて、偽善者とかいっています。

　むかしっから、ぺろって湯をかけて風呂にはいるんだよ、日本では。それが嫌なら、共同浴場はいるのやめるか、自分の国で風呂にはいれよ。勘弁してくれよ。なんでこんな風習まで偽善者呼ばわりされるんだよ。

これが有道ブログです。

　日本人は、風習の違う外国人といかにうまくやっていけるか、検討している一場面をとらえて、こうして悪意と被害妄想でしか日本・日本人をみない、外国人がいる。

　まあ、こうした外国人は一部でしょうけど、こうした外国人が日本人の外国人恐怖症を形成・助長している、のに早く気づいて欲しい。

英国人は嫌われているのか？

最近読んだブログのコメント欄で偶然にも英国人が差別されているが二つあったので・・・
英国人が差別されているというのは、イングランドではこうなのかなあ？で、スコットランドでの英国人に対する差別で紹介したが、こっちは、

I remember going into a fish ‘n’ chip shop in Wales and ordering a cheese and potato pie. “Are you English?” roared the proprietor. “Er… yes…” I replied. “WELL GET OUT!!!!”

Just as many Japanese can’t see prejudice against NJ as anything other than natural, many peope seem to assume that racism against the English isn’t really racism Still, at least his behaviour was technically illegal! Although the local Welsh bobbies would’ve just laughed at me had I complained.

I work as a chemical engineer in a beautiful medieval city of Krakow Poland for a large multi-national company. The biggest problem here regarding foreigners is a huge number of drunk British louts. They come up in a huge number, smash up bars and pubs, urinate everywhere, run around naked, and quite often beaten to pulp by local football supporters (and by cops, too). As a result, many bars here state, “No British allowed”. Thanks to the good reputation of the Japanese, I am always treated extremely well by the local bar staff, but they tell me a lot of horror stories once I tell them that I lived in the UK for seven years. Of course, there’s no cry of discrimination or whatever against the Poles as it is considered to be politically correct for the Poles to discriminate(?) the British. occidentalism

　たしかに、一部イングランド人の傲慢ぶりは他の国のひとにっては鼻につくところがあるのかもしれませんね。

　徐々にですが、改善してきているひとも多い。
　ゆっくりですが変化してきている。
　長い目でみてあげましょう。

バーバリアン＝、「バーバー」としか聞こえない言葉=外国語をしゃべる輩、というのは知っていたが、まあ、他にも面白いのがある。興味があったら見てみて下さい。

ああ、因みに、ピクニックというはピック、ニガー、黒人をリンチするという意味だった、と思われている、そうであるが、実はそうではなく、フランス語からきた言葉で食べ物を持ち合いでする会合のような意味だったらしい。

Attack motive 'could be racism'


Police are investigating a possible racist motive behind an attack on two Polish men in Antrim town at the weekend.
They were walking in the Bush Manor about midday on Saturday when they were attacked by a group of up to ten men.
A police spokesperson said one of the victims was struck a number of times with hammer.
The other man was attacked with a knife and was treated for a small puncture wound. BBC
