Herbert Hoover's long buried assessment of Franklin Roosevelt and "The Good War."

Another "major blunder," Hoover thought, was FDR's decision in 1941 to throw the U.S. into an "undeclared war with Germany and Japan, in total violation of promises upon which he had been elected a few weeks before." Roosevelt's "total economic sanctions" against Japan in the summer of 1941, and his "contemptuous refusal" of the Japanese prime minister's peace proposals in September, Hoover saw as the crucial precursors to Pearl Harbor. The day after the attack, Hoover told a friend that FDR's "continuous putting pins in rattlesnakes finally got this country bitten."

At least one protester has been injured as riot police were clearing an OWS encampment in a downtown Portland park area in Oregon, USA, on Saturday night. The teenager was hit in the face with a police baton. Several others were arrested.
Police say officers began detaining demonstrators at South Park blocks around 8:30pm after the park was closed 30 minutes early, AP reports.
Protesters are posting photographic evidence of police brutality during their raids. One of them shows 15-year-old Walker Prettyman, who was injured during the Occupy Portland protest in Shemanski Park. According to the young man, a police officer hit him in the face with his baton.

Younger Americans Going Abroad for Work
By Amanda Winkler

Brain drain reverses course, flows away from America
By Chris Taylor, Reuters

In fact, according to a survey by marketing consultants America Wave, the percentage of Americans aged 25 to 34 actively planning to relocate outside the U.S. has quintupled in just two years, from less than 1 percent to 5.1 percent. "Those numbers have shot through the ceiling," says America Wave founder Bob Adams, who has run nine such surveys over the years. "They're very surprising, and not something I anticipated. They're looking for work because of the sluggish economy, and they've lost confidence that the U.S. is going anywhere."
Younger Americans seem even keener to look abroad, with 40 percent of those 18-24 expressing interest in foreign relocation, which is up from 15 percent two years ago. "There's a feeling among more entrepreneurial Americans that if you really want to get anything done, you have to get out of country and away from the depressing atmosphere," says Adams, who lives in Panama. " There's a sense of lost direction, so more people are looking for locations that offer more hope about the future."

Student tells of Edinburgh racist bus attack
By Neil Pooran

A SOUTH African teenager has told how he was threatened with being stabbed and racially abused in a vile attack by a stranger on a bus.
Riaz Moola, 19, now says he feel safer in his native South Africa, infamous for its astronomical crime rates, than the Scottish capital.
The student says he was targeted for no reason, and had abuse hurled at him on a number 33 bus in Edinburgh as he went home.
The driver threw the thug off the bus, but passengers had to step in to prevent him getting back on.
Mr Moola posted an account of his ordeal, which happened around 5pm on November 17, on YouTube.
The video was in response to several clips of women going on racist rants on public transport in England, which have become viral hits.
Mr Moola said: “Edinburgh’s not safe, things like that never happened to me in South Africa, supposedly one of the most dangerous places in the world.
“I actually feel safer in South Africa after what has happened to me here.
He described the terrifying ordeal, where the man also tried to grab him by the throat.
Mt Moola said: “I sat next to a guy on the bus and he tapped me on the shoulder and told me to move, I just did it because he looked a bit scary.
“There was a couple sitting nearby at the back of the bus, they began scolding him and saying he couldn’t tell me to move like that.
“So I decided to go back to the seat and asked him why I couldn’t sit there.
“He said he thought I was from Pakistan and he started swearing and saying I was raping his country.”
Mr Molla initially laughed after the man said this, but the man then stood up and threatened to stab him.
“A man grabbed him to stop him from getting to me, and I moved away.
“I ran to the front of the bus, he was coming towards me and nobody could stop him.
“He came up to me and tried to grab my throat.”
He said the man was saying ‘I’m going to slit your throat, I’m going to kill you’ as he ran along the bus towards him.
Mr Moola said the driver, who tried to call the police, had to remove the abusive passenger before shutting the doors.
“But the guy walked down the side of the bus to my window and through the window continued to scream threats,” Mr Moola added.

Denver settles racial profiling suit, but police won't admit wrongdoing

DENVER -- One day after the city council approved a $20,000 settlement for two apparent victims of racial profiling, a Denver Police Department spokesman tells FOX31 the officers involved didn't necessarily do anything wrong.

"A settlement by the city is not necessarily an admission of guilt," said Lt. Matt Murray. "That shouldn't be a red flag or an indicator to anyone out there that the Denver Police Department is guilty of any allegation that's been made against us. All that indicates is that the city was willing to settle a case."

Name-calling attacker pleads guilty in hate-crime case
By: Mike Aldax | 12/06/11 3:29 PM

A racist thug admitted in a San Francisco courtroom Tuesday to assaulting a mixed-raced couple near the Civic Center farmers market after calling their two young children a derogatory term, prosecutors said.

Hosea Matavao, 48, pleaded guilty to felony battery and admitted to the hate crime allegation, which will keep him in jail until Dec. 28, Assistant District Attorney Omid Talai said. Matavao has been in custody on $500,000 bail since the Oct. 19 crime.

Although the family was not seriously injured in the attack, the hate crime admission bumped the assault from a misdemeanor to a felony, leading to more jail time, Talai said.

Around 1:30 p.m. at Eighth and Market streets, the white husband and his black wife were pushing their two sons, 3 and nearly 2, in a double-baby stroller, Talai said.

Matavao called the children "“n----- babies” as they passed. After the wife responded to the comment, Matavao punched her multiple times in the face. The husband was also punched while trying to hold the thug back.

Matavoa then followed the wife as she tried to flee with her children. He kicked in the stroller’s tarp, which hit the 3-year-old’s head, prosecutors said.

Toward a Gentler, Kinder German Reich?
The Realpolitik behind the European Financial Crisis
by Tony Corn

Journal Article | November 29, 2011 - 8:32am

Since the Berlin Republic now defines itself almost exclusively as a “geo-economic power,” there is no doubt that the first priority of a German-dominated EU China policy would be to lift the arms embargo in place since 1989. American taxpayers would thus continue to provide for the defense of the “civilianized” Germans (who spend only 1.3 percent of their GDP on defense) while Germany would be making money selling advanced military technology to America’s peer competitor.

Women in Britain are fed up
Why British women are being turned off the men in charge of the country "who haven't got a clue what matters to women".
Siobhan Courtney Last Modified: 05 Dec 2011

Childcare in Britain costs more than any other country in the world, according to research by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Maybe, in this instance, the UK would like to look to Europe and learn a thing or two from Belgium and Portugal's example, as, in Britain, 33 per cent of a family's net income is spent on childcare. This has resulted in a situation where it actually doesn't make sense for thousands of parents to return to work because they are financially worse off - I know, it took me a while to get my head around that one too. The fact that thousands are not able to go back to work has contributed to 1.07 million women out of work - the highest level for 23 years. Guess who was in power then, too?

The New York City Police Department says it will investigate a report officers made racist and inflammatory comments on Facebook about West Indian parade-goers.

The New York Times reports that in the postings, people participating in the September parade in Brooklyn were described as “animals” and “savages.” One posting suggested, “Drop a bomb on them and wipe them all out” while another read, “Let them kill each other.”

The Times said it obtained a copy of postings made on the Facebook page, titled “No More West Indian Day Detail,” before it was taken down in September.

Report Finds Racial Gap In Milwaukee Traffic Stops

A black Milwaukee driver is seven times as likely to be stopped by police officers as a white motorist, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Sunday.

The newspaper based that on an analysis of nearly 46,000 traffic stops that also found Milwaukee police pulled over Hispanic motorists nearly five times as often as white drivers.

It also found that police searched black drivers at twice the rate of whites, but those searches didn’t lead to higher rates of seized weapons, drugs or stolen property.

Suppressed Footage Shows Racist Attacks On Non-Whites By EDL

A suppressed video from June 2011 has emerged that shows unprovoked attacks on non-whites in Britain as officials ignore the threat of racist groups such as the English Defense League.

The video, which came out on YouTube but was later removed allegedly due to graphic violence, shows a man, who is identified as EDL member Cobz Smith, targetting non-whites on London’s Underground and launching assaults on them with slaps and kicks.

Cobz Smith originally posted the video on his Facebook account under the name of “Da Cobmeister” on June 21 and commented “paki got what he deserved,” referring to the beatings of a man who is apparently an Asian.

The video could have been shot before the date specified by the EDL thug, yet the violence it graphically pictures, does provide an example of the wave of racist violence that keeps going as officials refuse to ban self-acknowledged far-right groups such as the EDL and the BNP.

This comes as none of the major British news outlets have said anything about the footage, neither back in June, nor later or up until the present moment, while the police and government officials have also remained silent on the issue.

Over 30 arrested at Occupy DC

A crackdown on the Occupy DC encampment in downtown Washington ended with 31 arrests on Sunday following a nine-hour standoff with District police.
The demonstration in downtown Washington DC has been spared from police crackdowns since it began, setting it apart from sites in New York, Los Angeles and other major cities where cops have closed down spaces to protesters as the Occupy movement swells in size. Law enforcement arrived early on Sunday in DC’s McPherson Square, however, and ordered protesters to dissemble a wooden structure that was erected overnight in their encampment. The consensus among demonstrators was to keep the building, a wooden barn-like framework, intact, and police responded by arresting more than two dozen protesters early in the day.
The Washington Post reports that 15 demonstrators were arrested and charged with crossing a police line, with another 16 apprehended for disobeying a lawful police order.

Clash at Occupy DC camp could alter tenor of largely peaceful relations with police

By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, December 6, 3:42 AM

WASHINGTON — The arrest of 31 protesters at the Occupy DC site is a rare flare-up with police and risks creating new tensions in what’s been a largely peaceful coexistence.

The arrests happened Sunday after Occupy DC members refused to disassemble and get down from a wooden building they had erected in preparation for the winter. U.S. Park Police deemed the structure unsafe. Officers used a cherry picker to remove a handful of people who refused to come down from the roof.

Unequal partners: UK rethinks US extradition treaty

Dozens of British MPs are calling for a review of what they see as a one-sided extradition policy with the US. Drawn up in the post-9/11 panic, it decrees that Washington can demand anyone's extradition without proof, and London is obliged to obey.
All take and no give – that is the growing feeling in Britain’s parliament against America’s controversial extradition treaty. It was signed in 2003 and makes it far easier for the US to take people from the UK than the other way around.
Now, 45 members of British parliament from three main parties have crossed the political divide and joined forces. They have finally forced a debate and parliamentary vote on what they call an injustice.
“I think [signing the treaty] was a mistake,” says Keith Vaz, an MP and chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee. “It's not a level playing field. Even with a partner like America, we need to make sure that we are being equal and we are being fair to our citizens, and that is not the case at the moment.”

Update: Seattle Settles With Five Landlords Accused Of Refusing To Rent To Blacks

The city of Seattle has settled with five landlords accused of discriminating against black and disabled renters, in a case that involved a months-long investigation originally targeting 48 properties.

In October, the city’s Office for Civil Rights said its investigation – involving undercover testers posing as renters – had revealed a widespread pattern of discrimination against black and disabled people.

Officials said more than half of the properties tested had showed evidence of housing discrimination, in what they called a revealing snapshot of “normal, everyday business practices” in Seattle.

Practices included quoting higher rent to blacks than whites, neglecting to tell black renters of a move-in special, and doing credit and criminal checks not done on whites.

Regarding disabled renters, the city said some landlords had refused to accommodate service animals or had asked for a pet deposit.

The investigation resulted in administrative charges against six properties alleged to have broken fair-housing laws.

Five of the landlords or leasing managers settled with the city in November, the city said Friday. They admitted no wrongdoing and agreed to attend fair-housing training, provide their rental policies to the city for review, and post notices about housing laws.

They also each agreed to reimburse the city $600 for the cost of testing. No punitive damages were assessed.

The properties included Citywalk Apartments and Summit at Madison Park, both accused of racial discrimination. Mercedes Apartments, Eastlake 2851 and The Sedges Apartments were accused of disability bias.

Olympus Apartments in Belltown, accused of discriminating against blacks, did not settle with the city. That prompted a now-pending review by a city investigator.

After the investigation’s results were announced, the Office for Civil Rights acknowledged it had mistakenly tested a property owner outside Seattle limits.

The US immigration system is broken
Huge amounts of money are wasted on immigration detention in the US – it's inhumane, unjust, and possibly unconstitutional

SE Smith for This Ain't Livin', part of the Guardian Comment Network
guardian.co.uk, Friday 2 December 2011

Under the US constitution, people are entitled to all sorts of rights, particularly around personal liberties and freedoms. The current state of the immigration system in the United States is clearly violating some of these rights, in spirit if not in actual fact. Case in point is immigration detention; under the law, immigrants can be indefinitely detained while awaiting decisions on their cases, although a recent court case may change that. As my colleague Flavia Dzodan has pointed out, immigration detention is a global, multibillion dollar industry.

People put in prison in the US are at least passed through some sort of semblance of a justice system. It is usually a mockery, it is classist and racist, it all but ensures that certain people accused of certain crimes will go to prison for it, but it is at least a pretence of constitutionality. People in US prisons, on paper, have been allowed an opportunity to go to court, to receive fair trials. The fact that trials are not fair is inescapable, and the fact that the system is in urgent need of reform is undeniable.

Immigrants, though, are detained purely on suspicion. They have not been convicted of any crime. They are being held while the government determines if they committed a crime
. This differs from jailing in other cases, when people may be held if they are considered flight risks or threats to the safety of the community, while others are allowed out on bail, with the understanding that they will return to their communities. Mandatory detention laws in the US require that people accused of immigration violations be detained until trial. This translates into indefinite confinement.

Five Myths
Challenging everything you think you know
Five myths about Pearl Harbor
via mozu
1. The U.S. government had no knowledge of a potential Japanese attack before Dec. 7.

Beyond the obvious signs of Japan’s increasing aggression — including its sinking of an American naval vessel in the Yangtze Riverand its signing of the Tripartite Pact with fascist Italy and Nazi Germany — various specific war warnings had been sent by Washington to military commanders in the Pacific for some days before Dec. 7.

The War Department had been intercepting and analyzing secret cables between Tokyo and the Japanese Embassy in Washington and thought at one point that the Japanese would attack Hawaii on Sunday, Nov. 30. A Hawaii newspaper even warned, in a blaring headline, of a possible attack.

On Dec. 4, Roosevelt received a 26-page memo marked “Confidential” from the Office of Naval Intelligence detailing Japanese espionage efforts. The possible outbreak of war is mentioned, followed shortly by this paragraph: “The focal point of the Japanese Espionage effort is the determination of the total strength of the United States. In anticipation of possible open conflict with this country, Japan is vigorously utilizing every available agency to secure military, naval and commercial information, paying particular attention to the West Coast, the Panama Canal and the Territory of Hawaii.”

These were just general warnings, however, and a huge Japanese armada was able to travel thousands of miles from Japan to Hawaii undetected. The U.S. military and government officials were caught off guard by the attack.

3. The U.S. military responded quickly and decisively.

For months after Pearl Harbor, the United States suffered defeat after defeat in the Pacific theater. Rumors swept the country on Dec. 8 that the Navy was in pursuit of the attacking Japanese fleet, but these were false. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, in command of the Army garrison in the Philippines, sent Roosevelt a telegram pleading for naval assistance, including for U.S. subs to target the Japanese vessels delivering troops, but the requests went unanswered. There was little assistance to offer the beleaguered general, and the Philippines fell.

Interracial Eatonton Couple Unlawfully Denied Chance To Rent House, Judge Rules

A Putnam County judge has ruled that two Eatonton residents violated state housing laws by refusing to rent a house to an interracial couple.

In August 2009, the couple, Michael and Deanna Joseph, tried to rent a house in Eatonton owned by Roy Embry, according to a news release from state Attorney General Sam Olens’ office.

Initially, Embry’s rental agent, Rhonda Tuttle, met only with Deanna Joseph and agreed to rent the property to her and her husband.

Once it was discovered that Michael Joseph is black, Tuttle informed Deanna Joseph that Embry would not rent to an interracial couple and refused to rent the house to the Josephs, according to Olens’ statement

Young black males are stopped and searched the most often stats show

By Ayo Johnson
Published Dec 2, 2011 at 9:15 am (Updated Dec 2, 2011 at 9:14 am)

Every young black male in Bermuda is subject to being picked up by police multiple times due to the use of police stop and search laws, according to statistician Cordell Riley.

“Theoretically, every black male between the ages of 18 to 36 could be stopped four times,” Mr Riley said after a brief analysis of Police statistics.

“We know there’s a lot of double counting in those data. And so therefore we know there are people being stopped five, six, seven and eight times.”

He noted that the number of stop and searches had been on an uphill climb from less than 1,000 in 2008, 3,700 in 2009, and around 9,500 last year to likely 19,000 by the end of this year.

He said 90 percent were black and 85 percent were male. And 64 percent were between 18 and 36

Seeing in black and white in Australia
Lauren Fritsky is finding it hard to deal with racist attitudes in her new home

9:32AM GMT 02 Dec 201132 Comments
I attended a networking event the other night in Sydney during which an American friend and I struck up a conversation with an older Australian man. We were talking about a pretty bland topic – Australian television – when the man said he had a joke for us.
“An Aboriginal man walks down the street wearing only one thong. Someone calls out, ‘You’ve lost a thong!’ The Aboriginal man says, ‘No mate, I’ve just found one.’”
An uneasy look crept across my friend’s face and my guts started churning. We swiftly changed the subject. I made it my mission to distance myself from this man for the rest of the night.
Incidents like this one have played out in many a public setting since I moved from America to Australia in early 2010. There was the random man in Woolworths who thought it appropriate to tell me Indians run all the 7-Elevens; an old roommate who called Lebanese people “Lebos”; the friend of a friend at a rugby match who made comments about the indigenous players. The proliferation of jabs at or generalisations about minorities takes on a new level in the land down under, at least for me.
The subject of whether or not Australia is “racist” as a whole has been debated heavily over the years in major newspapers and on news shows throughout the country. Part of the concern stems from actual statistics. For instance, 36 per cent of Australians do not think certain Middle Eastern and Asian groups fit in with Aussie society, as reported in a 2009 survey by VicHealth. The same report said one in 10 Australians does not think all races are equal.

Most countries practice some form of racism or ethnic intolerance, and Australia is not necessarily worse than the others. Both Australia and America mistreated certain indigenous and minority groups well into the second half of the last century. In my experience, however, Australians seem to be more permissive of derogatory mentions of race or ethnicity than Americans. And that makes me uncomfortable.
The last place I lived before Sydney was Philadelphia, a city that, while diverse, still harbours its fair share of racist people. I remember the ex whose elderly father still used the “n” word, the kids in heavily Caucasian areas who shouted racial slurs at minority classmates, the fellow reporter who made sweeping generalisations about certain ethnic groups and races in the newsroom. But in this corner of America, I less often heard out-of-the blue jokes about race spewed from the mouths of strangers at a happy hour or other public event.
In Sydney, such comments are almost like an ice breaker. Words like “chocko” and “Abo” are as accepted in the vernacular here as “mate.” The political correctness that has come to permeate my mother country is sorely missing from conversation in Australia.

The terror of Babar Ahmad
The Islamophobia behind his seven-year ordeal in prison fighting extradition can no longer be ignored

Victoria Brittain
guardian.co.uk, Friday 2 December 2011

Five other men, including three Britons, are in the same position of having been fighting extradition to the US for years from prisons in the UK, where they are accused of no crime. The stress on their lives can be gauged from the fact that one has been moved to Broadmoor after a breakdown in the special detainee unit where Ahmad is held.

Ahmad's ordeal has had particular resonance in part because of the saga of the 73 injuries he received during his arrest, and his subsequent court case against the officers involved. In 2009 the Metropolitan police made an unprecedented admission that officers subjected Ahmad to a brutal beating causing multiple injuries, and offered him £60,000 compensation. The case exposed shocking behaviour by some officers, in which racism and islamophobia were overt; and incompetence, or worse, lay behind the curious disappearance of many sacks of vital evidence.

Two years later, in a criminal case against the officers, the jury was not told of the Met's admissions, or the payment it had offered, and the four officers concerned were found not guilty.

Two thirds of the people in Sweden relying long term on social benefits have a foreign background, while child poverty in the same group is becoming more and more serious, according to new reports.

”It is a real problem that poverty in Sweden has taken on an ethnic dimension,” said Björn Halleröd, sociology professor at Gothenburg university, to dail Dagens Nyheter (DN).

The report published in the paper revealed that 67 percent of those on long term benefits were born overseas, with unemployment being the main cause.

Using statistics from 2010, of the 117, 000 people on long term benefits, (defined in this case as over 10 months), 78,000 were from foreign countries.

Meanwhile the charity Save the Children has also flagged the problem of child poverty in Sweden.

In a recent survey carried out by the organisation, child poverty is markedly over-represented among those from a foreign background whose parents are unemployed.

The UK now faces a ‘lost decade’
By Martin Wolf

It is the foreigners wot done it. That was George Osborne’s excuse on Tuesday for how far the economy and the public finances are now off track. This was, of course, also the excuse used by Gordon Brown, Labour chancellor of the exchequer and prime minister, for the disaster that befell the economy in 2007 and 2008
. Mr Osborne scorned Mr Brown’s excuse. Should we now scorn the chancellor’s?
The big facts are that the UK is set for a lost decade and a longer period of stringency than expected. The government’s position is that there is no alternative. That has now become a self-fulfilling prophecy. So blame foreigners: that always works.

Jesmyn Ward: 'I wanted to write about the people of the south'

guardian.co.uk, Thursday 1 December 2011

Her biggest struggle was getting out of DeLisle, a place which for years she hated, for its smallness, its racism. The wealthy family her mother worked for paid for Ward to attend a private school, where for a while she was the only black girl in the entire student body. It wasn't a happy experience. When she was about 12, a boy came into her classroom one day, sat on her desk, "and started telling nigger jokes. And no one said anything. And I was looking at my papers. And I thought, he wants me to freak out, to start crying or to get angry. And I sat there and kept writing, and probably failing, and attempting to ignore him. When he saw he wasn't getting any response he said: 'Come on Mimi, I know you know some good honky jokes. Why don't you tell them to us?'" The teacher came back in and kicked the boy out, but Ward didn't tell anyone what had happened and it wasn't discussed in her friendship group. "No one else said anything and I was very aware of the fact that I wasn't part of their community, racially or socially."

UK Shop Owner Suspects Murder Of Sri-Lakan Man Was Racially Motivated

A Sri-Lankan shop worker at Stanley News and Wine may have been the victim of a racially motivated killing, his employer feared today.

The 30-year-old dad of two, who has children aged three and six, was stabbed in the neck as he manned Stanley News and Wine in Kingsway, Huyton on Tuesday night.

While detectives said they were keeping an open mind as to the motive for the attack shop owner Gunapale Welhengama, 63, said he believed it was race-related.

Dr Welhengama, who owns a string of newsagents in Huyton, today paid tribute to the shop assistant, who the ECHO is not naming while police attempt to locate his family in Sri Lanka.

He said: “It was not a robbery – nothing was taken from the shop. I can’t see any motive other than a racial one.

“There are a lot of Sri Lankans running newsagents in Liverpool and Wirral and a lot of [racial] incidents go on but this is a big one. It is a brutal murder.

“We are absolutely stunned by what has happened. He was one of the most polite, most courteous and hard-working men I have ever known.

Kentucky church votes to ban interracial couples
Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church votes on resolution that says the church 'does not condone interracial marriage'

A tiny church in rural Kentucky has voted to ban interracial couples from joining its congregation, pitting members against each other in an argument over race.

Members at the Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church in Kentucky voted on Sunday on the resolution, which says the church "does not condone interracial marriage".

The church member who crafted the resolution, Melvin Thompson, said he is not racist and called the matter an "internal affair".

"I am not racist. I will tell you that. I am not prejudiced against any race of people, have never in my lifetime spoke evil about a race," said Thompson, the church's former pastor who stepped down earlier this year.

"That's what this is being portrayed as, but it is not."

Dean Harville, the church's secretary, disagreed - he said the resolution came after his daughter visited the church this summer with her boyfriend from Africa.

Netanyahu Government Suggests Israelis Avoid Marrying American Jews
NOV 30 2011

The Netanyahu government's Ministry of Immigrant Absorption is sponsoring advertisements in at least five American communities that warn Israeli expatriates that they will lose their identities if they don't return home.
The Ministry is also featuring on its website a series of short videos that, in an almost comically heavy-handed way, caution Israelis against raising their children in America -- one scare-ad shows a pair of Israeli grandparents seated before a menorah and Skypeing with their granddaughter, who lives in America. When they ask the child to name the holiday they're celebrating, she says "Christmas." In another ad, an actor playing a slightly-adenoidal, goateed young man (who, to my expert Semitic eye, is meant to represent a typical young American Jew) is shown to be oblivious to the fact that his Israeli girlfriend is in mourning on Yom HaZikaron, Israel's memorial day.

For Byron Thomas, the Confederate battle flag isn’t about race.

The flag that the black 19-year-old University of South Carolina Beaufort student hung from his dorm room window is about Southern pride — pride that even a black Southerner can feel, he said.

Thomas, who grew up in North Augusta, said the South has been good to him. It’s a land of church, football and “good eats,” he said.

Thomas researched the history of the flag for a class project. That research convinced him the banner was about states’ rights rather than slavery.

“That’s all people want to see is racism. They want to see the KKK. They think of slavery. But that flag is a battle flag used for communication (during the fighting),” Thomas said.

On World AIDS Day, blacks remain outcasts
BY JULEYKA LANTIGUA-WILLIAMS

Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day, and in the United States we must draw attention to the need to combat AIDS in the African-American community.
Blacks make up only 14 percent of our population but account for 44 percent of all new HIV infections, making them the racial/ethnic group most affected by HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS, according to the Centers for Decease Control and Prevention.
One in 16 black men and onein 32 black women will be diagnosed with HIV at some point in their lifetime, the CDC predicts. In 2009, black men had an HIV infection rate more than six and a half times as high as white men, and two and a half times as high as Latino men, as reported by the CDC.

In 2009, black women accounted for 30 percent of new HIV infections among blacks. A whopping 85 percent of black women with HIV acquired it through heterosexual sex.
"The rate of new HIV infections for black women was more than 15 times as high as the rate for white women, and more than three times as high" as that of Latinas, the CDC found.
Blacks are especially at risk for social and economic reasons. First, 27 percent of blacks live in poverty, compared to 9.9 percent of whites. That often translates into limited access to high-quality health care and HIV prevention education.Second, blacks experience higher rates of other sexually transmitted infections, which can significantly increase the chance of contracting HIV.
Third, the cultural stigma associated with HIV/AIDS in the black community is so high that it discourages people from even finding out their health status. "Many at risk for infection fear stigma more than infection and may choose instead to hide their high-risk behavior rather than seek counseling and testing," the CDC states.

Working women are 'ultimate multi-taskers’
Women really are better multi-taskers than men - according to a study showing that they spend nearly half their time doing at least two things at once.

7:00AM GMT 01 Dec 2011
Working mothers multi-task for more than 40 per cent of their waking hours, researchers found.
The study showed that mothers spend 48.3 hours per week multi-tasking, compared with 38.9 hours for their partners.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the researchers found that most of the women described multi-tasking as a “negative” experience, which creates stress.

The researchers also believe that multi-tasking – particularly at home and in public – is a more negative experience for working mothers than for fathers because mothers’ activities are more susceptible to outside scrutiny.
Barbara Schneider, co-author of the study and a sociology professor at Michigan State University, said: “At home and in public are the environments in which most household and child care related tasks take place, and mothers’ activities in these settings are highly visible to other people.
“Therefore, their ability to fulfil their role as good mothers can be easily judged and criticised when they multi-task in these contexts, making it a more stressful and negative experience for them than for fathers.”
Working fathers do not typically face these types of pressures, according to Prof Offer. “Although they are also expected to be involved in their children’s lives and do household chores, fathers are still considered to be the family’s major provider,’’ she said.
The study was published in the American Sociological Review.

Dads are doing more, but moms are more stressed, study finds
A study of 500 dual-earner families finds that fathers and mothers are spending roughly equal amounts of time doing paid and unpaid work, but mothers are spending nine more hours a week multitasking.

By Melissa Healy, Los Angeles Times
November 30, 2011, 10:59 p.m.
With growing evidence that the American dad has stepped up his game when it comes to housework and child care, U.S. households would seem to have been swept clean of gender inequity. But a new study finds that women outpace men in doing more than one task at a time — and they are paying an emotional cost for doing so.

The findings, published Thursday in the American Sociological Review, come from a two-year study of 500 middle-class, dual-earner families from eight urban and suburban communities across the country. They show that while fathers and mothers log nearly equal time performing paid and unpaid work combined, mothers spend nine more hours per week multitasking at home and work than do their husbands.

It also finds that men and women respond differently to the challenges of multitasking — not so much at work, where both sexes find it stressful, but at home and in public places. While multitasking men tend to get that heady "superdad" feeling while juggling kids at the playground and a client on the BlackBerry, multitasking women are more likely to report feeling stressed, pressed for time and guilty about not spending more time — or more quality time — with their families.

In an age when parenting has become "more intensive," as the study puts it, the challenges and rewards of raising children have become a matter of growing research and national debate. Researchers consistently find childless Americans to be among the happiest, and have documented a drop in mental well-being among parents that does not lift until the kids leave the nest.

"We have this cultural belief that children are the key to happiness and a healthy life, and they're not," said Wake Forest University sociologist Robin Simon, who in 2005 found that no parents — irrespective of their kids' stage in life — were happier than adults who had no children. Simon called the latest study "fascinating."

David Duke Arrested In Germany, Faces Deportation

David Duke, a notorious American white supremacist, has been arrested in Germany and is facing deportation, according to his website and German media.

Duke, 61, is one of the United States’ most prominent racists, who has served in the Louisiana state legislature and is a former leader in the Ku Klux Klan. He has gained a huge following on the internet, where he promotes “white nationalism” and anti-Semitism.

He is said to have been living off and on for the last two years in Austria, which he has used as a base for his regular speaking appearances before extremist gatherings in Europe, including in Germany.

But according to the daily Die Welt newspaper, Duke was picked up by German police last Friday while trying to speak at a neo-Nazi gathering just outside Cologne. He was later released and has remained in Germany while authorities here institute deportation proceedings.

According to Die Welt, Duke was trying to talk to a gathering of about 60 extremists. But police had advance knowledge of the event and conducted extensive identity checks on attendees in order to disrupt it.

A woman has been arrested for allegedly making racist comments to other passengers on a packed tram. The incident was filmed and posted online, prompting police to investigate.
The clip (which contains explicit comments some viewers may find offensive) had been viewed more than 124,000 times by Monday afternoon after being uploaded to YouTube on Sunday, and shows a woman with a child on her lap shouting abuse at passengers. The incident happened on the Croydon to Wimbledon tramlink. British Transport police said a 34-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

The video footage, which sparked a Twitter trend with the hashtag #MyTramExperience on Monday, shows a woman complaining about ethnic minorities living in Britain. She starts by saying: "What has this country come to? … with loads of black people and a load of fucking Polish. You ain't English either. None of you are fucking English. Get back to your own fucking, d'you know what?

"Sort out your own countries. Don't come and do mine. Britain is nothing now. Britain is fuck all."

One of the passengers on the tram asks her to mind her language, saying: "There are little kids on the tram." The woman points to the child on her lap and says "I've got a little kid here."

My tram experience' is shocking – but should it be cause for arrest?

Occupy Wall Street's anarchist roots
The 'Occupy' movement is one of several in American history to be based on anarchist principles.
David Graeber Last Modified: 29 Nov 2011

Democracy in America?

According to the official version, of course, "democracy" is a system created by the Founding Fathers, based on checks and balances between president, congress and judiciary. In fact, nowhere in the Declaration of Independence or Constitution does it say anything about the US being a "democracy". The authors of those documents, almost to a man, defined "democracy" as a matter of collective self-governance by popular assemblies, and as such they were dead-set against it.

Democracy meant the madness of crowds: bloody, tumultuous and untenable. "There was never a democracy that didn't commit suicide," wrote Adams; Hamilton justified the system of checks and balances by insisting that it was necessary to create a permanent body of the "rich and well-born" to check the "imprudence" of democracy, or even that limited form that would be allowed in the lower house of representatives.

Why Naomi Wolf got it wrong
In the US, political repression - such as the crackdown on Occupy protests - doesn't require top-down coordination.
Corey Robin Last Modified: 29 Nov 2011

The US is somewhat unique in how decentralised it is in terms of both policing and politics. In much of Europe you're dealing with national police forces and national political parties that have real influence over local mayors - neither of which is true in the US. Local police in the US will take resources from the center and at times advice and even some coordination, but they are generally loath to give up any real autonomy. And they are quite capable of coming up with their own harebrained initiatives based on primarily very local politics. Much of the Oakland crackdown came in the wake of pressure from local business improvement associations that had little to do with national politics.

It's not surprising that, faced with the crackdown on Occupy protests, Wolf would immediately turn to a theory of national, centralised repression. It's part of our national DNA, on the left and the right, to assume that tyranny works that way.

Sweden Democrat: 'a negro is a negro' to me
Published: 28 Nov 11 16:42

According to the paper there have been many reports to the Swedish Equality Ombudsman (Diskrimineringsombudsmannen, DO) pertaining to the word and several companies and government agencies have been made to pay damages to people who feel discriminated against when that particular word has been used.

But Rydh told the paper that it is not the word but how it is used that is important.

“It shouldn't be an insult to be called a negro. There is the red race, the yellow race, and then there's me, who is of the white race. A negro is a negro. There is nothing demeaning with that,” Rydh told Smålandsposten.
“No, I don't know many negroes, there aren't that many in our area,” Rydh told the paper.

She retained the firm belief that it is the context that should determine when it is acceptable to use the term, and if someone feels insulted they should just say so.

Annika Rydh is one of two Sweden Democrats on the municipal council in Älmhult.

'Swedish society forces 'immigrants' to emigrate'
Published: 28 Nov 11

Swedes possess, aside from their reputation as the Scandinavian Japanese (quiet, polite, punctual, conflict-shy, nature-lovers) a characteristic which ethnologists continually return to: Sweden is the country where similarity is appreciated more than anywhere else.

This peculiarity causes us trouble when faced with that which constitutes the contrast to similarity: difference. People who differ - for example, immigrants, emigrants, returning Swedes, odd personalities, those with high ambitions or unwillingness to adapt to the social regulations - are at high risk of being met with negative attitudes.

In New York, there are currently around 25 other Swedes who meet to play football. Not as a pros, but as happy recreational amateurs. The team is called Blatte United, and consists mainly of Swedish-born guys who, when they lived in Sweden, were regarded as immigrants (sometimes classified into second or third generation...).

We lost them to foreign shores, because they diverged from Swedish norms and were never given a chance.

They thus chose to build their lives elsewhere. Today, they run lauded, world-renowned restaurants and advertising companies, or hold senior positions within banking and finance. Some of them can, without exaggeration, be called “Zlatans” within their respective fields.

We hold them up as Swedes who have succeeded internationally, but the truth is we bullied them away and showed them the door.

US Singer Attacked By Neo-Nazis In Czech Republic

The Czech Press Agency reports that singer Tonya Graves of the band Monkey Business has confirmed that a group of racist promoters of the ultra-right extremist Workers’ Social Justice Party (DSSS) attacked her on Saturday evening after a rally in Vimperk.

“I encountered some people from the Workers’ Social Justice Party at the restaurant. I was alone and it was unpleasant, they were not glad to see me there. They started shouting racist slogans at me, pulling me by the hair and spitting at me,” the dark-skinned singer, who has been living in the Czech Republic since 1995, told the Czech Press Agency.

Graves went on to say that even though two police officers were in the restaurant, they were apparently not on duty and did not assist her. Some of the other customers and a waiter came to her aid.

“The police who arrived on the scene when everything was over told me that they couldn’t do anything about it because the people who had assaulted me were not locals,” the singer says.

The Czech Press Agency is still waiting to hear from the Vimperk Municipal Police as to whether that was the case.[Source 1: Romea CZ]
