Tonia Edwards and Bill Main own Segs in the City in the heart of Washington, D.C. They guide their customers on tours through the nation’s capitol via Segway. They have a business license, but what they’re doing is illegal. Because they don’t have a license to speak to tourists.
“We can be sent to jail for 90 days for not having a license,” said Main. But he believes he shouldn’t need a license to talk to people.
“It's a breach of the First Amendment of the Constitution,” he said.
And they’re not alone in fighting government bureaucracy to keep their business afloat. Want to become a florist in New Orleans? You must pass a test that some say is more difficult than the bar exam to become a lawyer.
“It’s a completely subjective test that was evaluated by other florists who you were going to be competing against,” said Dan Alban, an attorney at Institute for Justice.
Or if you want to build a funeral home in Saint Paul, Minnesota? The government mandates that businesses spend 30,000 dollars on a useless embalming room even if the business doesn't need it and doesn't plan on using it.
These are just a few of the many occupational licensing cases the Institute for Justice says they are fighting against.
”We're talking about the right to economic liberty here. This is the right of someone to earn an honest living in an occupation of their own choosing,” said Alban.
How are these laws able to get enacted? Lobbyists and special interest groups infiltrate politics on the federal and local level. They urge lawmakers to pass regulations that benefit them, and keep the competition out. The result: an America growing increasingly regulated. According to the Institute of Justice, in the 1950’s 1 in 20 occupations required a government permit. Today it’s one in three. And all this red tape is costing taxpayers billions.

The British government asserts that Christians have no right to wear a cross or crucifix at work and is eager to prove it in court.
The case was initiated by two British women Nadia Eweida and Shirley Chaplin, after they were punished for refusing to take off their religious symbols.
Nadia Ewedia is a British Airways employee, who was asked to cover her cross while at work, and was placed on unpaid leave when she refused to do so. Shirley Chaplin is a nurse moved to a desk position after she refused to remove a crucifix.
The women claim they were discriminated against when their employers barred them from wearing a cross and crucifix respectively.
The government position is that wearing the cross is not a “requirement of the faith” and therefore employers can ban the wearing of the cross at work.
The case has been taken to the European Court of Human Rights, which is to decide on whether the right to wear a cross is protected under Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Article 9 states: “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and observance.”
Eweida and Chaplin claim banning the cross and crucifix at work violates their human right to manifest their religion.
But the authorities insist that since wearing the cross is not a “requirement of the faith” it does not fall under the remit of Article 9.

Security experts say China hacked secret F-35 fighter jet plans from BAE Systems

Chinese spies hacked into computers belonging to BAE Systems, Britain's biggest defence company, to steal details about the design, performance and electronic systems of the West's latest fighter jet, senior security figures have disclosed.
The Chinese exploited vulnerabilities in BAE's computer defences to steal vast amounts of data on the $300 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a multinational project to create a plane that will give the West air supremacy for years to come, according to the sources.
The hacking attack has prompted fears that the fighter jet's advanced radar capabilities could have been compromised.
Details of the attack on BAE have been a closely guarded secret within Britain's intelligence community since it was first uncovered nearly three years ago. But they were disclosed by a senior BAE executive during a private dinner in London for cyber security experts late last year.
One of those present said: "The BAE man said that for 18 months, Chinese cyber attacks had taken place against BAE and had managed to get hold of plans of one of its latest fighters."
BAE said: "We don't comment on allegations of cyber attacks against the company. BAE Systems' own cyber security capability can detect, prevent and rectify such attacks."
A former US official, speaking last week on condition of anonymity, said the BAE Systems element of the JSF program had "almost certainly" been penetrated.
However, he cautioned: "There are lots of aspects of weapons development. At least some aspects of it (the F-35 project) were targeted successfully by the Chinese. They didn't steal everything that was on that airplane, just some aspects."
The Chinese embassy in London described the claims as a "baseless allegation".
It said China condemned all forms of online crime.
Suspicions that the Joint Strike Fighter had been targeted by Chinese hackers first emerged in the US media in 2009.

あれから１年。児童７４人が死亡・行方不明になった宮城県石巻市立大川小学校で、長男の健太君＝当時（９）＝を失った佐藤とも子さん（４８）のバックには、お守り代わりに健太君が書いた一通の手紙が入っている。
３年生になったころ、道徳の授業でやりとりしたものだ。流産を経て３９歳のときに授かった一人息子。「健太だけが私たちの生きる、頑張るすべてだったんです」。涙が止まらない。
学校で先生がついていながら、なぜ命を落とさなければいけなかったのか。健太君を思うと、いつもそこに考えが行き着き先に進めなくなる。津波到達までの約５０分間、目の前に高台があるのになぜ逃げられなかったのか。助かったはずの命と思うだけで、悲しみと悔しさで胸が張り裂けそうになる。
４月には新学期が始まる。震災の記憶が世の中から薄れていくほど、知りたい先にはたどり着けなくなる。「私たちにとっては風化も何も、まだ終わっていないんです」。悲しみに暮れ、まだ前を向くことができない人も少なくない。

お母さん、手紙ありがとう。手紙をよんだとき（べんきょうがんばるぞ。）と思いました。手紙にはおもいやりのある子とかいてあったけど、ほんとうにおもいやりのある子になれたのかわかりません。やさしい子になれたのかわかりません。いつもめいわくかけているぼくだけどこれからはいうことをききます。手つだいしなさいといわれるまえからするようにがんばります。牛のせわもまい日して、おじいさんをたすけたいです。

覚醒剤密輸「受け取り役として、あまりに緊張感欠く」ラトビア人に無罪判決 東京地裁の裁判員裁判

覚醒（かくせい）剤約１０キロを石像に隠し密輸したとして、覚せい剤取締法違反などの罪に問われたラトビア国籍の無職、ザニス・クレペキス被告（３２）の裁判員裁判の判決公判が１２日、東京地裁で開かれた。藤井敏明裁判長は「覚醒剤の受け取り役として来日したとするのは、合理的な説明が困難」として、無罪（求刑懲役１４年、罰金８００万円）を言い渡した。
最高検によると、裁判員裁判の全面無罪は１６件目。覚せい剤取締法違反罪では７件目となる。
クレペキスさんは、平成２２年１０月に犯行グループと共謀し、石像に隠した覚醒剤約１０キロを南アフリカから発送、日本国内で受け取ったとして起訴された。公判では犯行グループとの共謀の有無や、石像内の覚醒剤を知っていたかどうかが争われた。
藤井裁判長は、クレペキスさんが宿泊先のホテルで予定滞在分の代金を支払わず、宿泊を拒否されたことなどについて「覚醒剤の受け取り役として、あまりにも緊張感を欠いている」と指摘。犯行グループが「事情を知らない受取人として被告を利用したとすれば、自然かつ合理的に説明できる」と結論付けた。
東京地検の八木宏幸次席検事は「主張が受け入れられなかったことは遺憾。判決内容をよく検討し、適切に対処したい」としている。

A year out, public health experts agree that the radiation fears were overblown. Compared with the effects of the radiation exposure from Fukushima, "the number of expected fatalities are never going to be that large," says Thomas McKone, of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health.And some, including Richard Garfield, a professor of Clinical and International Nursing at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, go a step further. "In terms of the health impact, the radiation is negligible," he says. "The radiation will cause very few, close to no deaths." But that does not mean that the accident has not already caused wide-reaching health issues. "The indirect effects are great," Garfield says.......

Experts on the ground in Japan agree. "Mental health is the most significant issue," notes Seiji Yasumura, a gerontologist at Fukushima Medical University's Department of Public Health. Stress, such as that caused by dislocation, uncertainty and concern about unseen toxicants, has been linked to increased risk for physical ailments, such as heart disease.

教材に「百人斬り」、教諭処分 長崎の町教委「不適切」
旧日本軍の将校２人が１９３７年、中国で「百人斬（ぎ）り競争」をしたと報じた当時の新聞記事を中学校の授業で教材に使ったのは不適切だとして、長崎県の新上五島町教育委員会が町立中の教諭を文書訓告にしたことが分かった。処分は１日付。
町教委によると、教諭は昨年９月にあった総合学習で、２年生２０人に「百人斬り」の新聞記事を読み上げた。２年生は翌月に広島への修学旅行を控えていて、平和学習の一環として記事を使ったという。
町教委は訓告とした理由について「百人斬りは事実だと明確に認められておらず、その記事を示して生徒の指導にあたったのは不適切だった」と説明している。町教委によると、教諭は「実際に１００人を斬ったかどうかを問題にしたのではなく、戦時下では人を殺す行為が英雄視される風潮があることを知ってもらうため取り上げた」と話しているという。

アパートに侵入して女性を乱暴し現金などを奪ったとして、警視庁組織犯罪対策２課は、強盗強姦などの疑いで、米国籍で住所不定、元タレント、アレクサンダー・リー・デラフエンテ被告（２５）＝強盗致傷罪で起訴＝を再逮捕した。同課によると、容疑を認めている。ドラマにも出た米国籍元タレント、女性暴行
デラフエンテ容疑者は平成２１年７月ごろからタレント事務所に登録し、多くのバラエティー番組などにエキストラ出演していた。同年９月と１０月に横浜市南区のコンビニエンスストアで強盗事件を起こしたとして、今年１月に逮捕、起訴され、事務所もやめていたという。
再逮捕容疑は、２３年６月２８日午後１０時半～２９日午前３時ごろ、東京都大田区のアパート１階に住む２０代の女性方のベランダにしのび込み、窓を開けた女性に薬品をかがせて昏睡（こんすい）状態にさせて暴行。室内から現金約５千円とキャッシュカードなどを奪ったうえ、現金自動預払機（ＡＴＭ）で約１万１千円を引き出したとしている。
同課によると、現場に残された遺留物のＤＮＡ型がデラフエンテ容疑者と一致した。同課は他に被害がなかったか調べている。
女性宅に侵入して暴行したなどとして、警視庁は１４日、米国籍の元タレント、アレクサンダー・デラフエンテ被告（２５）（強盗傷害罪などで起訴）を強盗強姦などの疑いで再逮捕したと発表した。
逮捕は今月１３日。
発表によると、デラフエンテ被告は昨年６月２８日夜、東京都大田区のアパート１階の２０歳代の女性宅に侵入し、クロロホルムをかがせて昏睡状態にした上で、現金約５０００円やキャッシュカードを奪い、女性に暴行するなどした疑い。容疑を認めているという。
デラフエンテ被告は２００８年１１月に来日し、ドラマやバラエティー番組などにエキストラとして出演。今年１月、横浜市内のコンビニ強盗事件で神奈川県警に逮捕された。

国会の「東京電力福島原子力発電所事故調査委員会」（黒川清委員長）は１４日、東電顧問の武藤栄前副社長から昨年３月の事故発生後の状況などについて聴取した。
武藤氏は、菅首相（当時）が昨年３月１５日の早朝、東京・内幸町の東電本店に乗り込み、「（福島第一原発からの）全面撤退はあり得ない」と発言したことについて、「一部の作業員の撤退は検討していたが、全面撤退の議論は一切なかった。（菅氏の言動には）違和感があった」と述べた。菅氏の行動は事実誤認だったとの認識を示唆したものだ。

「東電が撤退しようとしたのを菅首相が止めた」という話も半ページぐらいの簡単な記述で、東電にはヒアリングを拒否されたので一方的な記述だ。大鹿靖明『メルトダウン』では、吉田所長は「最小限度の要員を残して第二原発に移動する」と明言しており、清水社長が誤解したのではないかと書いている。こっちのほうが公平な評価だろう。
