Anti-immigrant sentiment greater in California than Texas

The study, led by Isao Takei of the University of Texas at Austin, examined the earnings by Mexican immigrants in California and Texas, the states with the largest Mexican immigrant populations. Looking at the current immigration population, the laws in both states and analyzing data from the 2000 5% Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS), (widely used in earnings studies because it provides a large, nationally representative sample of all sectors of the labor force, including minority populations), the researchers came to several key conclusions:
• Mexican immigrants have encountered harsher treatment in California than in Texas - at least over the last decade
• California has harsher anti-immigrant policies and sentiments than Texas, and provides fewer accessible services for them
• Foreign-born Mexican workers face more wage disadvantages compared with their counterparts of other nationalities
• The longer the immigrants stay in the U.S., the fewer the disadvantages they face
• Native U.S. born Mexicans tend to choose higher status occupations than do the foreign born Mexicans

Germany Launches Massive Crackdown on Neo-Nazi Music

Police raided apartments and offices throughout Germany in the biggest-ever action aimed at stamping out the radical-right music scene. The historic operation was two years in the making.

German authorities searched more than 200 locations on Wednesday, March 4, confiscating 45,000 CDs, more than 170 computers and some 70 weapons.

Music with such lyrical content is prohibited by the German Constitution. Selling neo-Nazi music is a crime, although possessing it isn't, as Mahler said at the press conference.

Berlin: Concern about increase in anti-police violence

Last year the number of cases where policemen were resisted increased by three percent to 3,371 cases. The number of injured police officer went up by almost seven percent to 924, said police chief Dieter Glietsch yesterday. Glietsch told a parliamentary committee that this year Berlin sadly got to first place.

Comparing to a decade ago, though, Berlin has seen a significant improvement. There were improvements in both statistics: 4112 cases of 'resisting the authorities' were registered in 1999. The number of injured police agents in 1999 was 1787. Through the years there has been a continuous decline and this year was the first time it went up.

The police is concerned about 'spontaneous solidarity' at emergencies. In the last three years there were ten cases a year of sudden group violence against police agents.

Glietsch said yesterday these were mostly youth and young men of immigration background. In these cases there was a 'fundamental repudiation of state power and our values'. Since 2006, the police has been recording these riotous gatherings in its own statistics魚拓<

The BNP wants to send the Poles home
The British National Party has launched an anti-immigration campaign harking back to the Battle of Britain, but it features a Polish Spitfire.
The poster, part of the European elections campaign, was unveiled last night, with a Spitfire and the words "Battle for Britain".

The party is campaigning against allowing Europeans into Britain

But historians noted that the fighter was acutally part of the RAF 303 squadron, which was made up of expatriate Poles.

In the Battle of Britain Poles shot down 203 Luftwaffe aircraft which stood for 12 per cent of total German losses in the battle.

A Royal Air Force museum spokesman said told the Daily Mail: "The Spitfire in the poster can be identified as belonging to 303 Squadron of the Polish Air Force by the code letters RF painted in front of the RAF roundel."

Deportation reprieve extended for two Miami brothers

Juan and Alex Gomez, two Miami brothers who came to represent the plight of many young undocumented immigrant students, got another reprieve from deportation this week.

U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., on Tuesday filed what's called a private bill on their behalf to keep them in the country through 2011. Two years ago, Dodd and U.S. Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, R-Miami, filed similar bills, but they expired last year. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had scheduled to deport them to Colombia on March 15 .

The Gomez brothers, who came to this country as toddlers, were at the center of a media maelstrom two years ago when advocates pushed for a bill called the Dream Act. The measure would allow undocumented immigrant students to pursue college or military careers.

Their parents were deported in 2007. Juan now studies finance at Georgetown University and Alex attends Miami Dade College.魚拓

　不法滞在で国外退去処分が確定した埼玉県蕨市のフィリピン人、カルデロン・アラン・クルズさん（３６）一家が、法務省に在留特別許可を求めている問題で、一家は拘束を猶予される仮放免期限の９日を前に、長女ののり子さん（１３）は国内に残すことを決めた。


　一家の代理人の弁護士が６日、明らかにした。一家は、のり子さんが日本語しか話せないことなどを理由に３人で残れるよう求めてきたが、受け入れられない場合は「日本で勉強を続けたい」というのり子さんの希望を優先することにしたという。一家には東京都内などに住んでいる親戚(しんせき)が３人いる。

NI tops creationist belief survey

A quarter of those questioned in Northern Ireland said they believed in creationism while 16% said they believed in Intelligent Design.
Theos spokesman Nick Spencer said the survey found many people had inconsistent views.
"The overall picture in the UK is that about one in four are convinced evolutionists, while one in five people are convinced in their opposition to evolution - half of whom are creationists and half who believe in intelligent design," he said.

　カバは水中で子を産むが、１５年前のこの日は寒く、モモの母は陸上で出産。モモは飼育員に育てられたため、「泳げないカバ」と話題になり、特訓で泳ぎを覚えた。

　子育てが心配されたが、過去２度とも水中で出産、授乳し、人の手を借りずに育てた。人間なら３０歳の堂々たる母親ぶりに、飼育員らは「案ずるより産むがやすし」。

Falls police say woman put up racist sign


NIAGARA FALLS—Two days after a man was sentenced to probation and community service for putting up a sign as a “joke” in a public works garage that said “whites only” on a drinking fountain, city police were called to a home in the 600 block of 25th Street on Sunday to investigate another racially charged sign.

This one was clearly no joke.

No charges were filed Sunday, but police told the woman she must take down the handwritten sign on a fence on her property saying, “I rent three bedrooms [at her address to] white people Niagara Falls.”

The 53-year-old woman told police she put up the sign after someone tried to break into her house and added, “I can do what I want. I live in America,” according to a police report.

Police said they received complaints and she must take the sign down. An officer at the scene said the woman agreed to take down the sign under protest. The officer said the woman already had seven more signs she was planning to hang up.

Staff faced homophobic and racist abuse plus bullying, documents claim
Staff at a police station in central London have encountered violence and racist bullying, an internal Scotland Yard investigation has found.
Many police community support officers (PCSOs) in Belgravia were afraid to speak out and some were assaulted or threatened by colleagues, it added.
The review was submitted to an employment tribunal brought by a PCSO.
He said there was an "apartheid" system at the station with separate vans used to transport black and white officers.

Among claims of racist language were an allegation that one officer said: "Stick by me and we will bring down all the lazy blacks, one by one.

Jayashri Srikantiah, the director of the Stanford clinic, which has sued the federal government to get more information, said some detainees are pressured to sign the deportation forms even though they may have defenses against deportation or be eligible for asylum or green cards. About 95% of the people who agreed to the speedy deportations since 1999 are not represented by attorneys, she said.

"We have people mostly who are in detention in remote locations, without lawyers, who are non-English speakers, and they are being asked to sign away their rights," Srikantiah said.

Today begins in earnest that detestable, despicable annual campus hate-fest known as Israeli Apartheid Week.

It started in Toronto, five years ago, before metastasizing to nearly 40 universities around the globe: a pile-on of hyperbolic anti-Semitism that de facto equates Zionism with racism, not even pretending to draw distinctions any more.

You might remember Durban I, circa 2001, known formally as the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance. That chaotic and embarrassing anti-Israeli fiasco was hijacked by both Arab and African delegates – the former demanding that Zionism be linked to racism in the most hateful language imaginable; the latter demanding compensation for slavery in previous centuries.

Not a peep was heard about contemporary slavery in the Sudan or the thousand-year practice of flesh commerce in Islamic societies. Nor was there condemnation of Hutu-on-Tutsi atrocities in Rwanda in 1994. It was all about damning Western colonialism in the past and Israel in the present.

A political appointee to the Staten Island Community Education Council forwarded a racist e-mail to dozens of people, angering officials with the local NAACP.
Salvatore Ballarino admitted sending an e-mail featuring photos from the last presidential debate with voice balloons added to suggest a conversation laden with racist jokes.
"It was a political cartoon," Ballarino said. "It was a joke, and I treated it as such."
In the e-mail, Sen. John McCain is shown telling then-candidate Barack Obama that he has black people in his family tree, adding, "If I recall, they're still hanging there."
In another exchange, McCain asks Obama the difference between a black man and a picnic table, before offering that "a picnic table can support a family."
Tammy Greer-Brown, education chair for the Staten Island chapter of the NAACP, said she was "disgusted."
"There needs to be some severe action taken, not just an apology," Greer-Brown said.

In America, where a right to trial by jury is in the constitution, the vast majority of cases result in plea-bargains (so do not go to trial) or concern minor offences, which are normally dealt with by a single judge. In Britain, only 1% of criminal cases end up before juries, which rarely deal with inquests, either.

Britain is seeking to restrict juries even further. In 2003 the government gave itself the power to abolish juries in long and complex fraud trials, arguing that judges sitting alone or accompanied by expert “assessors” would be able to reach speedier, safer and cheaper verdicts.

Survey: Hate crimes worry Long Islanders

Hate crimes worry Long Islanders, according to a recent poll that said 89 percent of its respondents are either very or somewhat concerned about hate crimes on Long Island.

The survey of 400 residents - 200 each in Nassau and Suffolk - conducted by researchers at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., also found that Long Islanders are highly aware of recent hate crimes here.

The survey comes in the wake of a torrent of media coverage of the Nov. 8 death of Marcelo Lucero, the Patchogue man and Ecuadorean immigrant who Suffolk authorities say was killed by a group of teenagers who routinely targeted Hispanic men for harassment and random beatings.

The Sacred Heart University/WSHU Public Radio Poll, which was conducted this month, also found 7 percent said they had been a victim of a hate crime. The margin of error for the random phone survey was plus or minus 5 percentage points.
