Income inequality in the Roman Empire
December 16, 2011 by Tim De Chant

Over the last 30 years, wealth in the United States has been steadily concentrating in the upper economic echelons. Whereas the top 1 percent used to control a little over 30 percent of the wealth, they now control 40 percent. It’s a trend that was for decades brushed under the rug but is now on the tops of minds and at the tips of tongues.

Since too much inequality can foment revolt and instability, the CIA regularly updates statistics on income distribution for countries around the world, including the U.S. Between 1997 and 2007, inequality in the U.S. grew by almost 10 percent, making it more unequal than Russia, infamous for its powerful oligarchs. The U.S. is not faring well historically, either. Even the Roman Empire, a society built on conquest and slave labor, had a more equitable income distribution.

‘Horrible Racial Abuses’ Committed By Seattle Police
The founding member of Social Equality Educators (SEE), Jesse Hagopian, speaks of “the horrible racial abuses and police brutality” committed by the Seattle police.

“It was not too long ago, just a couple of blocks from my house, a young (African American) girl who goes to Franklin High School was punched in the face by the Seattle police officers for jaywalking,” Hagopian told Press TV's U.S. Desk on Saturday.

The most horrific incident of police brutality in Seattle, he said, was committed just a few months ago when a homeless woodcarver and a native American “was shot down in cold blood.”

Hagopian expressed concern about the police treatment of African Americans and other people of color in Seattle.

In a recent blistering report, the U.S. Department of Justice condemned the Seattle Police Department for engaging in a “pattern or practice” of violating the constitutional rights of citizens by using excessive force against them.

Thuringia's secret service actively sabotaged the police investigation into the trio of neo-Nazi terrorists from the eastern German town of Zwickau, a newspaper reported Monday. The agency even tried to pay the trio 2,000 Deutsche marks (€1,000) at one point.

According to the report in the Berliner Zeitung, the domestic intelligence agency of the state of Thuringia kept neo-Nazi leader Tino Brandt informed of the police surveillance he was under.

Brandt had connections with the three murderers Beate Zschäpe, Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt, and the secret service, or Verfassungsschutz, hoped he could lead them to the terrorist cell.

Brandt was one of the agency’s informants in the extremist far-right scene, and was reportedly told that the police were watching him from a rented flat near his home in Rudolstadt. He was also given descriptions of the cars the police were using to follow him.

A Pakistani security salesman was viciously beaten and tortured in a hate crime at a home in an upscale neighborhood in Tomball, Houston, on Wednesday.

The Houston chapter of CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, wants local law enforcement and the FBI to investigate the possibility David Nienberg, 42, targeted the salesman because he’s Muslim.

Inside Memorial Hermann’s ICU, Yaqub Bham is recovering from an attack so traumatic his wife says he has trouble sleeping and looking in the mirror.

“One of his ears has been bitten off, and the bone is exposed,” said Bham’s wife who asked not to be identified.

Bham is covered in bruises, has ten broken ribs, a fractured shoulder and is at risk for infection.

“This person bit him inside his tongue three times,” said his wife.
